Consent Matters: When Tech Takes Remote Control Without Your Permission

"The irony is that, decades ago, when your average person had minimal experience with computers, those inexperienced users had much more control and autonomy over them."

As of todays -next (git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/k) you can run the without any additional patches using the default mainline arm64 . This means distributions can enable it without trouble from 5.12 onwards. The itself needs some more work but it builds a lot on what we have for the devkit.

We opposed the EARN IT Act last year because it would have let states regulate the Internet, and empowered unjustified online surveillance. eff.org/deeplinks/2020/12/2020

With phoc being a phone compositor and touchscreen being a primary input device, mouse pointer handling has been a bit neglected - but it's going to change soon! Fixing some pointer-related bugs and adding quality of life improvements in :) @purism

Democratize the web crawler. To me this should be regulated requiring website owners to allow access to more than just Microsoft and Google say, access to all crawlers or at least 1-2 independent ones. Since crawling frequency can be set in the robtot.txt settings that should not be too much of a drain for say Instagram or Facebook.

With latest updates, GNOME Web (Epiphany) can play YouTube videos on the Librem 5, so you won't have to switch to Firefox to do that anymore. And you won't believe where the bug was located[1]! ;) Call `sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-libav` or wait a few days until it's installed by default with the next update and enjoy. @purism

Apps... Tons of apps... Is the browser dead?

Today it seems that people believe that nothing works without an app. So, people must have an app for every single website they use, for every bank card, for every supermarket, for everything! Even for telling them that they are or might be sick!
People suppose that apps open up the entire world to them. But they don't. The aim of most of them is to keep them inside one single website, supermarket chain, etc.
When it comes to social media it's the same. People need an app for each one of them. But there are some great apps that can connect us to more than one social network on our great Fediverse. Unfortunately these apps can't deal with all different protocols that there are.
That's when the good old web browser comes handy! Et voilá! One single and great piece of software, one single app with it's handy tabs solves all the connection issues with the several social networks that we love!
Who said that the browser is dead?! libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-7

Starting a phone call from the terminal on a Birch. This call is to the good old "Fröken ur" speaking-clock service telling us the current time in Swedish. Fröken ur apparently existed since 1934 but it was not until 2020 that I learned how to call her from the terminal. 😃 Thanks @dos for the tip that xdg-open could be used in this way. @purism

Riding on a wave of nostalgia, took out my #Jolla 1s and #JollaC (running various versions of #SailfishOS 2.x), performed factory resets, and updated all of them to the latest #Sailfish3. Took several hours, but they now feel like brand new devices. I miss the smaller screens!

For some reason chokes a little compared to the devkit. Patches are all out there now so everyone can build their own encrypted images.

-sdl changes are already merged upstream, thanks @craftyguy

Based on @craftyguy 's -sdl work i added cryptsetup-initramfs support to the 's image-builder so one can build encrypted images too. There's more work needed for this to hit the factory floor but at least one can build own images with encryption once all is merged. The video shows the devkit since this a bit simpler to debug over serial:

@agx @exalm@floss.social @purism by the way this isnt even visible in this app or in safari using iOS 9.3.6 please make compatible with old and no longer supported browsers.

As you can see in the picture absolutely nothing shows other than bread crumbs.
