Apps... Tons of apps... Is the browser dead?
Today it seems that people believe that nothing works without an app. So, people must have an app for every single website they use, for every bank card, for every supermarket, for everything! Even for telling them that they are or might be sick!
People suppose that apps open up the entire world to them. But they don't. The aim of most of them is to keep them inside one single website, supermarket chain, etc.
When it comes to social media it's the same. People need an app for each one of them. But there are some great apps that can connect us to more than one social network on our great Fediverse. Unfortunately these apps can't deal with all different protocols that there are.
That's when the good old web browser comes handy! Et voilá! One single and great piece of software, one single app with it's handy tabs solves all the connection issues with the several social networks that we love!

Starting a phone call from the terminal on a #librem5 Birch. This call is to the good old "Fröken ur" speaking-clock service telling us the current time in Swedish. Fröken ur apparently existed since 1934 but it was not until 2020 that I learned how to call her from the terminal. 😃 Thanks @dos for the tip that xdg-open could be used in this way. @purism #calls #mobile #gnu #linux #freesoftware
Riding on a wave of nostalgia, took out my #Jolla 1s and #JollaC (running various versions of #SailfishOS 2.x), performed factory resets, and updated all of them to the latest #Sailfish3. Took several hours, but they now feel like brand new devices. I miss the smaller screens!
... and here's the same from yesterday but on a #librem5.
For some reason #plymouth chokes a little compared to the devkit. Patches are all out there now so everyone can build their own encrypted #PureOS images.
#osk-sdl changes are already merged upstream, thanks @craftyguy
@mladen hey the Search Apps still says search apps.
@purism nuce video and kusic!
Based on @craftyguy 's #osk-sdl work i added cryptsetup-initramfs support to the #librem5's image-builder so one can build #luks encrypted images too. There's more work needed for this to hit the factory floor but at least one can build own images with encryption once all is merged. The video shows the devkit since this a bit simpler to debug over serial:

Dialect is a cool new translation app available on Flathub and running on the Librem 5. 😄️
Thanks for the 747 app votes so far! We're just getting started!

@purism …and here's a quick Quake II demo using the #librem5 docked via usb-c (audio is from L5's built in speaker) - might be a bit more exciting than running #libreoffice (which also works):
