The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.
For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).
"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.
There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.
It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.
Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.
I've been on a chronological timeline both here and on Twitter for a few years. Here is how I manage it:
I don't follow lightly. Following means I want to see all your posts. I read each post.
I filter. When ppl fill up my whole timeline with streams of posts too often, I either filter boosts or unfollow. It's nothing personal.
What about trending? Easy to tell what's trending because people w/ shared interests who I follow post/boost about the topic. If not, I follow someone new who does.
Tooting from @maartje 's Mastodon 3.11 for Workgroups! Though not sure if the parsing weirdness is my poorly setup WebOne or not
Now that I'm really cranking through this project, I had the fleeting thought "wow maybe it *would* be profitable to sell these" until I did the math. It will take 8 hours to weave the fabric and another 12 to finish it (tying fringe, washing, ironing) and sew it into a tote. I realized if I sold them for $350 I'd cover material costs and pay myself a $15/hr minimum wage.
So if you are wondering why I'm not opening up an Etsy store or something, that's why. #weaving
Hello Fediverse!
I'm sharing a thing that I hope can be the beginning for many conversations, and represents for me a statement that is the result of many years of conversation:
I call it the #slocanstatement, and I'm sharing it here first, in public, in the spirit of the Fediverse.
I hope you'll read it, share it if you think it's a valuable statement, and comment and revise it towards building consensus across the Fediverse.
@aallan Perhaps he used the quote incorrectly, but that in and of itself isn't an argument against what he *meant*.
@thebusychristian You're welcome!
@dnsprincess Aaaaaand Firefox wins. Surprise! I would expect that the people being polled would generally use Firefox.
@thebusychristian ‘When you get what you want, that's God's direction’ — certainly can be! But sometimes what you want and get isn't what God wants. For example if you pursue something evil, and you get it, that isn't God's direction.
@tarheel Oh man, that's a neat site. Thanks!
@hllizi Oh I'm sure many people would still do work, but I think the distribution of work would be all wrong. There are jobs that need done that most people would rather avoid. And many people would rather play games and have fun all day; less work would get done.
@tarheel So as I understand it, each server keeps an index of hashtags on its own (maybe it works differently actually but it seems to be this way effectively). So you can go to your server's website ( https://toot.cafe/ ) and from there, search for hashtags.
@servant That's pretty cool.
I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.
It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.
It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.
Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.
Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.
Hello there!
I boost a lot of posts, but I have a few things to say every now and then.
I am largely fine with boosting posts from people I disagree with even on significant, dividing issues. I usually don't, however, if they actively advocate for these ideas... so it goes :/
