Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.

Is there an app or an easy way to harvest, download, etc your Twitter DMs? I'm downloading my Twitter data but I'm realising there are conversations etc with people going back to 2008 in Twitter DMs I'd love to be able to access if the site goes away. When you download Twitter Data it gives you your DMs... but with no information on who you were talking to. It looks like this, and is thus a very special kind of useless:

...please note the move toward centralizing podcasts into apps from Amazon/Audible, Spotify, iHeart, YouTube, TikTok etc.

If you like podcasts, use an RSS-based podcast player. Support the open ecosystem. We can only survive if you clearly see the threat and act supportively.

I found this diagram online. I think it can be useful for folks new to #mastodon. I know I forget it all the time.

After the dotcom bust 20 years ago, there was a shift away from attempts to turn the Internet into a portal owned by a single company (AOL, Yahoo, etc) using incompatible and proprietary tech, in favor of open standards.

This spawned a heydey for things like self-hosted blogs, RSS and XMPP powered by Linux. People rejected lock-in and embraced the benefits and freedom open standards brought. Even Big Tech embraced these standards.

But why not both?

From Twitter - looks like one of the microservices that "isn't needed to run the site" that Elon wanted to turn off got turned off... They killed the code that sends you your 2FA codes.

I really like the green checkmark system in Mastodon, but when relying on them for trust it's important to keep in mind *what* you are trusting:

* The security of the remote site (hacked site could vouch for an attacker)
* The security of the Mastodon instance (same)
* The integrity of the Mastodon instance (a modified version could let the owner disable the remote check)

This is one reason why I like self-owned instances on the account owner's domain.
