@Big_Diggity Rule of thumb: if you can't point to where your data is physically stored, you don't own it.
@Av1 @survey Thank you for the suggestion :) I don't think it is ethical to block ads though. Whether you like a service or not, it *is* how the "free service" is "free", and I like being able to use services without paying them outright.
However -- I use a cross-site tracker blocker, and if that results in a website's ads being blocked... well, they never had the right to cross-site track me in the first place!
The excellent @dansup (creator of @pixelfed) also maintains two very useful Fediverse tools:
➡️ https://fedidb.org - A dashboard for the Fediverse, with details of how server types and specific servers are growing.
➡️ https://fediverse.info/explore/people - An opt-in directory of people on the Fediverse sorted by keyword. You can add yourself to the directory by including special hashtags in your profile.
If you've used them before, take another look as they've both just been revamped.
@fribbledom
@mattsledge This is odd. When I have lots of tabs open it's like < 1.5GB usage, and from my experience > ~2GB hasn't happened. What kind of websites do you have open?? I suppose you have some much, much heavier work open than I do 🤷♂️ When I talk about PC memory usage with people, the browser is *never* like that.
Wow... that first set was art.

Feels sad to watch... I appreciate the robust nature of #analog, always have, always will
The Best of Hack and /: Linux Admin Crash Course is published!
This book doesn't aim to be an exhaustive guide to everything you need to know to be a system administrator. Instead, this book allows me to act as a remote mentor to someone starting out in IT or system administration whether as a full-time job or as a full stack developer.
It's available in premium hardcover, paperback, and ebook forms here:

@Big_Diggity How about the Everwhats?
@kyle Sorry to hear that! But I'm glad you're staying as an advisor. Good luck with the book. When it is out I want a copy, it sounds interesting and like it could be very helpful to me!
If you installed a Linux system with disk encryption more than a couple of years ago, there's a decent chance it's using a weak key derivation function and someone who cares enough would be in a position to brute-force it. https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/66429.html has more details and instructions on how to update to a better KDF.
@survey I'm excited about Large Language Models and open source. This isn't the best example, but #RedPajama: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35600860
Hello there!
I boost a lot of posts, but I have a few things to say every now and then.
I am largely fine with boosting posts from people I disagree with even on significant, dividing issues. I usually don't, however, if they actively advocate for these ideas... so it goes :/
