@Fairphone What is the best way to recycle a phone without risking personal data? For computers I always destroy the harddrive and then donate the rest, but it's a lot harder to use that method on smartphones made of glass and metal.

@gbryant New name suggestion- The Linux Gnomer. Far more accurate and you get to keep all your TLG artwork!

If only there was a Tech podcast / show that had...

- No Swearing (kid and work friendly)
- No personal attacks ("Be Excellent To Each Other")
- No political attacks (no matter who you vote for, we're friends)
- Lots of nerdy-ness (goofy and serious)

@mjjzf @switchingsocial@mastodon.at I'm currently trying out Zoho Docs. I don't believe it is FOSS, but they claim that they don't farm your data. They give away their Office services in hopes that you'll pay to have email, storage, etc. all in one place.

@purism Will a version of @pixelfed be joining the Librem. One lineup? Will it be free of cost like Social or part of the paid offerings?

@distrotube@mastodon.technology I struggled to get Deepin OS to work on my laptop for several months before I realized I could just install DDE on top of Arco. As a true Linux end-user who knows next to nothing about what's happening under the hood, the realization that I could slap a desktop onto any OS was a game-changer. If people just love Cinnamon, it's already available on near about every operating system. I don't think it's unfair/offensive to question Linux Mint's place in the world.

@erikstl @switchingsocial@mastodon.at Oh, yeah. The open street map idea is a huge fail in regards to navigation. I tried searching my house address while sitting on my sofa. Apparently, my sofa is 8 miles from my house.

@mcpaccard Sounds like IOI from Ready Player One! Too creepy and wrong.

Sensor calibration settings can be used by apps/sites to fingerprint iOS and Android phones.

We added a "Lockdown Mode" for the Librem 5 which allows you to defend against this.

@libreoffice I love LO because it is an easy door to lead people through to show them the power and beauty of open source. I haven't yet convinced my family to dump Windows for Linux or Facebook for Mastodon, but I've gotten many of them off MS Word. LO made that easy!

@switchingsocial@mastodon.at Wow! Big thanks to the switching social community here. I have a lot of options to go explore.

@gbryant Librem5 vs. PinePhone- Both run linux. Both have hardware kill switches. But they don't appear to be targeting the same demographics. Librem5 is more expensive (higher build quality?) and seems primed for security minded business use (as well as enthusiasts). The Pinephone seems to be built for the enthusiast and the tinkerer. So my question is... Which one is shaping up to be the better bang for the buck? As a normal dude who just wants a smartphone that works, which do I buy?

@switchingsocial@mastodon.at I've been able to find acceptable substitutes for Google Docs and for Gmail, but I'm struggling to find a good Google Calendar replacement. I need something that is easy to set up, can sync between a phone and desktop client, and preferably has a free or at least cheap option. What are my options?

@FruedianFloyd @switchingsocial@mastodon.at ProtonVPN has worked really well for me so far. I like the fact that I can bundle it with ProtonMail as well. The free versions are good enough to use as is or to try out before buying an upgrade. Installation on Linux and Adroid is fairly easy for both Proton products.
