@duncan_lithgow @petrisch @yorik Also, worth mentioning that some parametric support is coming such as arrays in IFC. This is because roads and infra projects really need that feature.

petrisch boosted

@duncan_lithgow @petrisch yes, currently IFC does not support parametric relationships very well. However, this is a relatively simple fix. First, supply both native and IFC , where native is FOSS like Blender or FreeCAD, and then establish an unofficial pset to hold parametric data which Blender and FreeCAD supports. Later when parametrics come into the spec, we swap the pset out.

Just going heavyly through the OpeningDesign repo. Its amazing!
So i guess for this approach it would be helpfull if manufacturers (where I'm comming from) would upload theyr objects to github, right? So they could be forked there. That would also make colab more easy....why isn't that happening more often?

petrisch boosted

@petrisch @duncan_lithgow We actually already have Git working as a "BIM server" or CDE on a small scale with the OpeningDesign arch studio :) This is completely decentralised!

With Git LFS, I believe this can be scaled, and I am actively trying this out.

Archipack now supports splitting and merging walls!

youtu.be/UHwHOG3eOoQ

This is an incredibly important feature for #OpenBIM - people split and merge walls every day!

@duncan_lithgow Oh right. By BIM providers I mean deliverers to the building industry. Those who know how to use theyr product. Seen BIMServer, which is very cool when the project participants are known already. This is more like bimobject, buildup etc... but dezentralised...whatever that means 🙂

Wir haben einen Meilenstein erreicht: die CDU fordert, dass mit öffentlichen Geldern entwickelte Software als #FreieSoftware allen Zugute kommen soll. #publiccode : fsfe.org/news/2019/news-201911 @fsfe #nt

Feeling a little visionary today, wouldn't it be nice if we had a dezentralised network of BIM providers?
There are a lot of BIM hosters around, but:
- You rely completely on them.
- If they are just providing a link, then you have to opt-in.
- None of them will ever be complete.

Wouldn't it be intresting for companies to participate on a network, where they can be the hoster? Something like the Fediverse, BIMiverse in this case.

Still time for people to run for the #openstreetmap foundation board. At the moment I don't see any women. Makes me sad as the only women to go through a full term (I've been here for 2 full ones). wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Fo

@thinkMoult I have to get used to the fact, that you dont want much detail from day one. For us mech this is strange 😃 makes it hard to automice stuff when you need LODs and a like. But I like the fact that FOSS is taking the lead in this field!

@thinkMoult well you see i am a mechanical engineer. The hole AEC thing is new for me. In my world you want to be precise on every mm even if you dont go directly on a production machine. Im working on a product that has to deal with this issue. Its a machine that has its interface to a building...

@thinkMoult there is an interresting comparison to revit. You think blender is intended to be used for the construction part? Isn't that more a domain for something like ?
