It's a complicated loom but no one understands it but its weaver. Shaft.

Apparently naming your floor loom is a thing weavers do. Right now my top pick is "Shaft" because of course it needs to be a pun and having a theme song is icing on the cake.

My local yarn shop sells natural-color wool from sheep living in the county south of here and the skeins actually have pictures (and names!) of the sheep the wool is from. I just need to decide on a project before I buy it all. ⁨

I'm over halfway through with this krokbragd ⁨⁩ project. It's amazing how much faster this is on a floor loom compared to on a rigid heddle.

I'm finally getting to the fun part of this project where patterns start to emerge. ⁨

So the main reason I wrote the Visual Voicemail App for mainline linux phones is because my mother leave voicemails if she can't get a hold of me to check up on me and gets worried if I don't call her back.

I'm glad to share that my mom can still do that since I switched to a #librem5

(and yes, I did call her back both times!)

I finally fired Google. In this post I write about how I got locked in, how I got out, and what took me so long. puri.sm/posts/i-finally-fired-

Another good reason to buy an L5 is that you are supporting the development of Mobile Linux. Purism pays for a full time engineers to develop for mobile linux!

So fun fact, the #librem5 kill switches work extremely well!

I can keep the Mic/camaera off until I need to make a phone call and/or take a picture. Even if I forget to turn on the mic before the call, it will flip and work just fine!

Wifi/Bluetooth and the modem kill switch also work great.

There was such a backlash against the IRS biometrics requirement that the IRS is changing policy. Imagine what would happen if enough people felt the same way about the companies that do far worse.

This doesn't look like much, but it took me over 5 hours to warp this loom today (mostly because I was trying a new back-to-front warping technique).

We'll be having a (virtual) contributors get together at this Sunday. The jitsi room can likely handle some more people so if you're a contributor (designer, translator, bug reporter, developer, distribution packager, …) and want to meet the other folks just sign up at fosdem.org/2022/schedule/event

See you there!

Note I'm not saying there won't be dev jobs in the future, there are still factory jobs and sysadmin jobs, but they will be fewer and more specialized, focused on supervising the automation and the decreasing list of things automation can't do. No longer the sure thing it is now.

Both Google and Microsoft (who employ huge numbers of developers) are investing heavily in AI that writes software. Just like shop class, coding class in high school gives you nice skills, but neither is a guarantee of a good-paying job in the future.

I used the leftover yarn from my wife's tweed scarf (left) to make myself a plaid scarf (right) so they match without being identical.

It's OK to step on my hand-woven rug. It's OK to wipe my feet on my hand-woven rug. I will keep telling myself this while I step over my rug.
