This stuff is never free anywhere but the scale of Big Tech insulates you from it somewhat.
I actually think it’s good to be reminded that our ability to communicate comes with a cost – in terms of resources, environmental impact, etc., not just money.
But, equally, it also makes the case that a system optimised to host hundreds of thousands of people on a single instance is not also somehow magically optimised to host just one person.
The latter is the problem I’m exploring with #SmallWeb.
What happens when you have your own Mastodon instance (just for you) where over 21,000 people follow you and when you’re following over 4,300 people?
You end up paying ~€50/month for Mastodon hosting 👀
It also opens up interesting questions: what happens when a popular account joins your instance (hint: it will probably cost the instance maintainers quite a bit… I don’t envy the mastodon.nu folks right now).
For the #Linux and #opensource people out there who are curious about #eBPF, I wrote up some thoughts on the recent eBPF Summit with links to a few particularly good talks. Enjoy! https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/community/highlights-from-the-ebpf-summit-2022.html
I’m just now realizing I should do an #introduction on here!
I’m Natalie. I’m a #Drupal developer. My comfort zone has always been theming, site building, & content architecture, but I’ve been doing a lot more backend stuff recently. It’s fun! But there is still so much for me to learn! When I’m not busy with work stuff, I enjoy dabbling in #genealogy. Speaking of family, a large chunk of my dad’s side is in #Ukraine , so do not be surprised if you see me toot about Ukraine
I recorded this episode of @reality2cast back in April with @shawnp0wers and @kyle about making the move from Twitter to the fediverse with Mastodon and I think it’s all still relevant. It’s a fun and nerdy chat you can check out here: https://www.reality2cast.com/109 #TwitterMigration #podcast #opensource #nerdsWithMics 🤓🎙️
@starshaped I decided to give the Hobonichi weeks planner a try because the size seemed perfect for portability, and holy wow is the paper awesome. Kind of mind blowing. I got the mega, which I may or may not even need, but it’s still not that thick. Amazing.
We’re bringing back #followfriday right?
This post on #digital #wallets by @dsearls is getting a lot of nice attention, but I’d love to see more comments and feedback. I’ve also enabled the #substack chat feature, and I’m curious to see if that will encourage some discussion. https://reality2.substack.com/p/the-digital-wallet-will-be-the-biggest #identity #ssi #opensource #useragency
The digital wallet will be the biggest instrument of personal agency since the browser—but only if we make it ours — by @dsearls https://reality2.substack.com/p/the-digital-wallet-will-be-the-biggest #digitalwallet #opensource
This is a great conversation about "chopping wood and carrying water" in #opensource projects from my fellow evangelist @pixelgeek and #Kubernetes contributor award winner, Patrick Ohly. https://community.intel.com/t5/Blogs/Tech-Innovation/open-intel/Q-A-Patrick-Ohly-Talks-About-Chopping-Wood-and-Kubernetes-Logs/post/1426064 #k8s #contribution
Time for an #introduction. I've been involved in #FOSS and #Linux since the late `90s. My career started as a sysadmin, pivoting to security. I'm the President of @purism and work on hardware and software to protect #privacy, #security and freedom.
I've written a number of books (https://kylerank.in/writing.html) and was a long-time columnist for Linux Journal magazine.
I have many hobbies including #weaving, refurbishing mechanical #calculators, #3dprinting, #brewing, and many other things.
@purism Is there a way to show a "bounce" message or something for people trying to DM someone on social.librem.one from another instance?
