More than 2,000 law enforcement agencies across every state now have access to technology that allows them to extract data from confiscated phones.

A new report by @TeamUpturn details the dangerous growth of these tools:

Microsoft got in antitrust trouble for bundling IE for free w/ Windows to compete with Netscape.

Now imagine Microsoft controlled whether Netscape could be installed or updated on Windows, and blocked them, and you are closer to the current situation with phones.

So impressed with the work @johan Thelin has done with FOSS North this year despite all the challenges that have come. The schedule for the upcoming talk is pretty amazing and relevant.
So grateful for all of Johan's work to keep what I humbly feel is the best independent, FOSS conference in Scandinavia.

Free Unix! 37 years ago today, the initial announcement of the GNU operating system was posted to Usenet. Every day since then has brought them closer to their goal of a world where users can do their computing in complete freedom.

Don't forget to submit your session to #LibrePlanet 2021 by October 28th! LibrePlanet is the FSF's annual gathering for free software activists, developers, and all those concerned about digital ethics.

Can we please, please – PLEASE! not make the nonsensical US date format month/day/year the default in applications? 🤦‍♂️

And to all users of that format: it makes no sense, it's counter-intuitive, it makes collaboration frustrating, it introduces inconsistencies and errors... Just stop. Please. Use international standards.
(And don't get me started on your other units of weights, volumes and distances. Bloody hell.)

Boost if I'm right.

We need to defeat this bizzare cognative dissonance people face when they have to re-evaluate the place email holds in their mind. It's not some useless relic of the last generation to cast off in the course of chasing the shiny new.

- Federated
- Decentralized
- Built with open standards
- Fault tolerant
- Enjoys a wide variety of open-source clients & servers
- Has widely available implementations for almost every programming language
- Already being used for software development at scales greater than GitHub-style development has ever dreamed of

"Email? Yuck"

Screw that noise. Set aside your preconceptions and look at email for what it is. The things that make you "yuck" about email are more related to the bastardization of email *software* by corporate interests like Google and Microsoft, and have next to nothing to do with email itself.
