T-Mobile hotspots (at least on this cell plan) throttle really hard really early 😠
Eh, better than no hotspot.

It was, like, going at 60KB/s before tho d:`,

I don't want to spam the town too much, but...

The view is so good it's almost like cheating when taking pictures.

You want to read a man page for `foo.' *Actually* read it, not just do a quick search or just consult the command-line switches.

Do you: _____

@dallin@fosstodon.org Google has a campaign now: android.com/get-the-message/
Not too long ago I got an Android phone, and went to college. Making friends, we got in a group chat, and eventually me and I think one other in the group were discovered to be the ones with Android, though they didn't mean it in a rude way.

But still, it can cause interpersonal gaps. Harming personal messaging between your devices and a competitor's is one of the saddest forms of I can think of :(

The most sustainable phone is the one in your pocket. Make it last. 🌍💚

@dallin@fosstodon.org Apple's vendor-lock-in with iMessage is particularly bad, because not only does it harm functionality, it hinders social interaction for non-Apple users, and makes Apple's messaging system look superior while doing it. RCS, a new texting system, fixes a lot of problems with traditional SMS and MMS messaging. It has very wide support from pretty much all modern tech, except Apple's (surprise). And so poor messaging between Apple users and everyone else continues.

It took Benjamin Franklin three hours to get going in the morning. Suddenly, I feel decently high-functional.

Gotta #confess...

I miss the sounds of hard disks clicking.

It was such great auditory feedback regarding your computer's state, and it was so great to HEAR your computer working.

Haven't had one as a primary/boot disk since 2014 or earlier.

Of course, they were pretty quiet by then.

I don't miss my screaming 20MB miniscribe so much.

Well... maybe even that one. X"-D

Every so often I feel drawn to my #DEC #vt510 terminal. Tonight I've spent an hour or so reading email and browsing the web (yes, with #eww) on it. Despite, or perhaps /because/, its limitations, something about it seems familiar and comfortable.

And I'm writing this toot using the #cli program called #toot, from my amber 80x25 screen on a vt510 that's nearly 30 years old. toot reminds me of IRC in a way, and I think that's a good thing.

How often are you in the #Fediverse?
Please boost or share!

If you're starting a brand new account on a Fediverse server, it's not a good idea to post lots of content before you have followers.

The only people who can see your posts on the Fediverse are those on your server, those on other servers which have at least one person following you, or those who see your post shared.

If you post all your best content up front on a brand new account with no followers, no one outside your server will be able to see it. Even if they follow you later, the posts you made before that will not be visible to them, because Fedi platforms don't backfill old posts on accounts you follow.

It's much better to gradually add content as your follower numbers grow.

You only need one follower from a server in order for everyone on that server to see your post. Even if you only have a dozen followers, that's up to 12 other servers that can see what you post.
