I miss the time where no one branded themselves on the internet.

When people were just their goofy selves and didn’t take everything so seriously.

When social media was a public square and not pay-to-play arena.

When it paid to be human rather than some marketed version of human.

But everyone I’ve seen do this gets pushed out.

Because that sort of content doesn’t pay and money runs the world… maybe mastodon can evade this 🤞

@CM30 That's understandable. Enjoy your hiatus :)

@RL_Dane I get the feeling. Even though I'm a, uh, young whippersnapper, I've messed around with old computers and I miss them. Just raw computer, neither backdoored nor "smart".

@RL_Dane I saw that - 100 lines; unbelievable.
Still though... something about running something as small, old-school and implementable as the UXN CPU on bare hardware... is so perfect

@RL_Dane Another thing. I wonder what it would be like to run UXN (or other homebrewn small ISAs) code on an FPGA?

(At "implement it" I was talking about the VM)

@RL_Dane And taking it further, I could implement it as an EFI executable and run it on bare metal. Sure, the actual OS would be interpreted but it would be really neat.

@RL_Dane I've dabbled in UXN. I was thinking about making an OS for UXN, but 64KiB and other limitations of it have turned me against the idea of implementing my dream OS in it. I've had ideas for a while....

On and off I work on my own instruction set architecture. UXN was the final boost that got me to get it to a semi-reasonable place.

Perhaps I'll finish up that ISA's design and implement a VM for it. Then, I could make a little OS for it.

@RL_Dane Have you ever considered trying your hand at making your own OS ;)

Fascinating story: politico.com/news/2023/03/07/p

At first the police just wanted two hours of footage from this guy's doorbell Ring cam.

"It was just the beginning.

They asked for more footage, now from the entire day’s worth of records. And a week later, Larkin received a notice from Ring itself: The company had received a warrant, signed by a local judge. The notice informed him it was obligated to send footage from more than 20 cameras — whether or not Larkin was willing to share it himself."

@kashhill This is what closed-source and the cloud can get you into. How much is your data really yours if it can be grabbed like this?

I just got a really cool idea -

Why don't I go live this weekend via, perhaps, PCM audio at golemwire.com:10002? You could use parec and pacat and netcat to "tune in" to the port and we could have a live chat only for anyone who has the technical know-how to connect!
And maybe if you want to hide your voice - well, you get to figure that out. Pipe through espeak maybe?

@CM30 Soooper Marioooo... Galaxyyyy!
Good memories.

At this rate, we'll be able to piece together the whole before April 🙂

"If you're feeling unmotivated, there's no point in overthinking it. The time is now. Get those hands moving. Motivation will come later."

I do not want Slack to provide a probabilistic summary of what I said. I don't want notion to guess what I'm going to say. I want to choose my words with clarity and precision in mind, and if people want me to take the time to read what they've written I would hope that they've taken the time to choose their words too

And I really want to take my words out of training data sets

You don't need separate accounts to interact with different kinds of Fediverse servers.

For example, if you have a Mastodon account you can follow PeerTube accounts such as @theatticdwellers or @alliterative and their videos will appear in your Mastodon timeline as if they were Mastodon posts.

If you reply to a PeerTube video within Mastodon, the reply will also appear as a comment below that video on PeerTube. (And comments made on PeerTube will appear as replies on Mastodon.)
