Google killing off their basic HTML version of Gmail due to basic HTML not including 'full feature functionality' seems like code for 'we don't make ad revenue off this version'.

We relied on the basic HTML version while doing arctic fieldwork in 2017 using low bandwidth satellite internet. Gone were extraneous graphics and junk ads getting served - just mail. It's also no longer possible to auto sort messages in the full version without enabling tracking to serve ads.

People keep pushing for preferences instead of better defaults. Don’t ask for things to be made configurable, ask for them to be improved!

Upscaler 1.2.0 is available on Flathub 🎉 - Upscaler is an app that allows you to upscale and enhance images, be it 2D or 3D.

We've put a lot of effort to improve stability and compliance with the GNOME interface guidelines. We've also made the following changes/additions:

• New icon
• Add drag & drop support
• New keyboard shortcuts
• Add labels for assistive technologies
• Improve support for high contrast
• Port to newer widgets
• Ellipsize text when file names are too long
• Add WebP support
• Transpose image (useful for photos taken by smartphones)
• New translations
• Add Vulkan checker

I also want to congratulate @gregorni and Matteo for being maintainers and helping out the project :)

Linux wasn't a "desktop" platform to begin with either so that argument doesn't make sense.

Linux is what we make out of it by contributing to the solution. The Linux kernel has the capability to run well on mobile. We have mobile shells and adaptive toolkits and devices that can run them well. We need to continue to grow the app ecosystem and work on infrastructure bits sure but this very thread proves that this is happening at a nice pace.

Have been playing with #Droidian this evening on an old Google #Pixel 3aXL. Overall very impressive. Initially I tried #UbuntuTouch but found it too locked down for my particular use case.

There are still a number of wee bugs with the OS, but overall it is very impressive - and far better than Ubuntu Touch.

Have any of you experimented with it?

apple shouldve branded their VR headset as a kind of headphones, but for your eyes. call em the apple eyephones

When splitting phosh-osk-stub out of one of my goals was "use it from day one". This required to hack in a virtual-keyboard driver so Electron apps (and other apps that can't deal with text-input-unstable-v3) can fall back to "emulated key presses" instead of using an input-method.

Prompted by input from Kai Lüke who (rightly) pointed out that the German layout was missing symbols in virtual-keyboard mode I revisited the situation and we can now handle more languages:

Dear @junocomputers if you sell computers and use Free Software Operating systems it is not o.k. to assume you can free ride on community support.

It makes me sad to have mails from users in my inbox that are stuck with an unusable device on a Sunday and are seeking help to get it going again. This is your job.

Please listen to your customer's issue. If it's a software issue in the latest upstream version forward it with a good description.

@droidian Congratulations! I noticed you didn't update phoc. Is there an issue with switching to newer wlroots or just: we didn't get around to it? For the moment this shouldn't be a problem on phones.

Just found the first and only RAW image viewer on linux that actually works:

1. rotates images correctly
2. shows embedded jpgs correctly
3. instantly switches between raw folder images

nomacs.org

Basically now my default image viewer even for jpgs

Progress in supporting Indic languages in phosh-osk-stub:

- merged initial completer support for Indic languages based on libvarnam earlier this week
- have an MR to switch from libvarnam to more modern govarnam (thx @subins2000
- @arunmani is looking into making all the possible completions available
- have an MR to allow to switch between different completion engines automatically (e.g. use for Us & De and for (see video below)

I don't really share my tattoos on social media, but this one seems fitting for mastodon :-) done by my fiancé (as are most). Nice way to play around with colour transitions and lack of outline. Really happy with the result! #Debian #tattoo #colours

it's called a man page because it won't shut up about stuff you already know and doesn't actually have the answer to your question

phosh 0.31.0 is out 🚀📱:

Lots of fixes in ➕ better xdg-activation ➕ less CPU usage ➕ animations on tiling/max

now supports the tablet-mode of convertibles (based on work by Jonathan Hall)

p-m-s allows to configure the notification priority for waking up the screen (thanks to Suraj Kumar Mahto).

libcall-ui switched to GTK4 thanks to @antonok.

Check out the full release notes at phosh.mobi/releases/rel-0.31.0

I have been enjoying @somafm so much, that I picked up the iOS app. It has very nice UI and a lot of neat built in features. It is totally worth downloading.

There is a long standing issue in (the compositor used with (but as I recently learned also other projects like ) that makes windows flip their size when crossing a screen edge (as tiling is (incorrectly) kicking in). This makes dragging windows around in docked mode harder than necessary.

This is about to improve and (thanks to the ground work over the past months) we can also add some visual feedback:
