A strong example of this comes from navigating with apps in Austria. Apps like #OrganicMaps #OsmAnd and others that use #OpenStreetMap data have much better information on footpaths, bike lanes, and minor roads than #Google does. So often my preferred route is entirely absent in Google Maps. On the other hand, Google Maps sometimes has more information on shops, offices, restaurants, etc. Other apps have much better transit information. Yet many stay in the Google bubble because of this bias 2/

When discussing #Google alternatives for #privacy, I heard: "I tried X a couple times but it didn't give me the results I wanted but Google did, so I stay there". I use multiple search engines and see each one's strengths and weaknesses. This made me realize there is a kind of bias: using one service provides simplicity. When using one, we don't know when that it is providing worse results than alternatives. Then people get the impression "the alternative sucks, I'll stick with the good one" 1/

@cobratbq I was trying to get the holy grail of setups working: secure boot, kernel lockdown mode, encrypted swap and hibernation. Seems not yet possible, but S0ix states seem to work pretty well. Too bad they are hidden away under a strangely labeled BIOS setting: "Block Sleep (S3)". Technically, S0ix is not S3, but there seems to be a lot of mislabeling.

Going to my #BIOS and disabling "Block Sleep (S3)" makes this promising message show up in the #kernel logs: "Low-power S0 idle used by default for system suspend"

So I just worked through trying to make #Debian bookworm do hibernation with encrypted swap and #SecureBoot. Looks like #Linux is fine with using a swap file from an encrypted partition, but now the requirement is apparently that the swap is signed to prevent modification. @EyalL I'd say it is pretty clear that attacking civilian infrastructure many hundreds of kilometers away from the war is not legal. You might try asking Germany how they feel about it. And if you think this attack was legal, then Russia's attacks putting Ukrainians in the dark would also be legal. That's a terrible precedent to set.

Just because #Putin is bad and his invasion of #Ukraine horrendous does not automatically make the powers that be in Ukraine good. @nanoelquant @tootiredtothink I'm also a New Yorker. On 9/11, I watched with my own eyes the 2nd plane hit and both towers fall. I worked around the corner then. My home and office was immersed in its smoke for a month. NYC knows what it means to be attacked, and yet the vast majority were opposed to both the Iraq and Afghan wars. It crushed me to see the logic of war set in in Ukraine. More weapons means more death and destruction with no other guarantees. History shows there are other ways 2/

@nanoelquant @tootiredtothink I suggest you look into what actually happened to start the war in Afghanistan. No one believes that Afghanistan or the Taliban attacked the US on Sept 11th. The Taliban even offered to turn over Al Qaeda to a third country. The Bush administration was hell bent on war, and NATO was sympathetic given the scale of the attack. 1/

@nanoelquant @szbalint Austria lets anyone spy on any foreigners. We have at least two NSA spy bases, for example. If you single out Russian spying in Austria, you're only seeing a tiny piece of the whole story. Usually that point of view comes from people pushing a specific agenda rather than sticking to the facts and history.

War is not the only defense, for example, India kicking the British out, Czechoslovakia freeing themselves from Soviets and Communism, and so many other examples. 1/
