The main public instance is now requiring logging in with a Google, Facebook or GitHub account in order to create new rooms.

Apparently they feel that there was too much abuse of their terms of service, but they do not give any details at all.

I'm sympathetic to their position. Any time you run a public service without user attribution, abuse is inevitable. Thankfully they provide the option to self-host.

Is there a trusted common-good identification service they could use instead? I can't think of one.
