Comparing the Librem 5 USA and PinePhone Beta by @amosbatto

Slow for what? #Librem5 (including the USA version AFAIK) can smoothly play two videos simultaneously:
https://social.librem.one/@ozmik/105939468751642844.
And it can smoothly play 3D games:
See also a list of Apps that fit and function well on #Librem5, with screenshots:
https://forums.puri.sm/t/list-of-apps-that-fit-and-function-well-post-them-here/11361
#Pinephone can install a new operating system on #Librem5.
On the left, I installed #Mobian using instructions from here: https://wiki.mobian-project.org/doku.php?id=librem5. And on the right, it works!
There are serious reasons for #Librem5 to be expensive: https://social.librem.one/@ozmik/105988959710195259.
It it not slow at all:
https://social.librem.one/@ozmik/105939468751642844.
The battery lasts 10 hours, and this is before suspend is even implemented:
https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/community-wiki/-/wikis/Frequently-Asked-Questions#21-how-long-will-be-the-battery-life-of-the-librem-5-evergreen.
It might be glitchy now, but it will have lifetime software updates:
https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/community-wiki/-/wikis/Frequently-Asked-Questions#311-how-can-purism-provide-lifetime-software-updates-for-the-librem-5.
I am sure all bugs will be fixed within a year. It will get better with time unlike iPhones.
Have a look at "reasons to buy" in the table comparing the #phones:
https://forums.puri.sm/t/comparing-specs-of-upcoming-linux-phones/6827.
To me, the reasons to buy #Librem5 are bigger (in case you can afford it). #Pinephone is perfect for lower budget while still providing most of the freedom and reasonable performance.
There are a couple serious reasons why #Librem5 is much more expensive than #Pinephone:
1. @purism intentionally choose #hardware manufacturers supporting #FOSS to change the industry:
https://puri.sm/posts/breaking-ground/. Librem 5 is a custom design.
2. @purism pay to a team professional developers to work on #phosh free software mobile interface, which is installed on most Pinephones:
https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/community-wiki/-/wikis/Frequently-Asked-Questions#310-why-did-purism-decide-to-create-the-new-phosh-interface. Purism upstream everything.
Pinephone with Mobian (left) runs app called "Power Supply"
https://gitlab.com/mobian1/packages/powersupply,
which was specifically written for this phone. Librem 5 with PureOS (right) does not have such app and I decided to show "Power" on it, which is a part of "Settings".
In this video, I'm trying to connect #Librem5 to #Pinephone via original #PINE64 USB-C dock. Expected that Librem 5 would be charging.
Instead, the dock makes strange #beeps and Librem5's LED blinks in rhythm! (You may need to turn up the volume to hear that.)
@PINE64 any idea what is happening?
Yes, Librem 5 is a custom design and much more complicated than any typical phone. See list of its hardware components: https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/community-wiki/-/wikis/Hardware/Librem-5-component-list.
The reason for that is that Purism made 6 innovations in the phone, including kill switches and kernel free of blobs: https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/community-wiki/-/wikis/Frequently-Asked-Questions#15-how-innovative-is-the-librem-5.
The camera has not been working for a very long time, so "a hardware feature did not exist". But very soon every phone will have it working with a software update: https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/linux-next/-/issues/44#note_148408.
You are right, this is currently a regression. But it will be solved with software updates, so I don't see it as a serious problem with the phone.
Librem 5 solved the problem with low-power mode in an elegant way: it does not have suspend enabled yet. It has ~12 hours battery life without suspend. But it will eventually be implemented.
Yes, of course.
Same here.
You cannot see my last toot? That's strange, since it is public and I can open it in an incognito window. It's also got 8 boosts, so other people definitely can see it.
The toot compares how Pinephone and Librem 5 play videos in Firefox.

Yes, the difference is noticeable. See my new post: https://social.librem.one/@ozmik/105939468751642844.
