As the author of this article says - free software should be dependant on free software architecture - I recommend codeberg.org as an open-source alternative to Github.
Sadly Github is no longer a platform that can be trusted.

flatpak sometimes feels like app devs shipping to the end users the OS that app devs prefer via the runtimes, on top of the host system OS. but without app devs having to maintain the full stack of a linux distro.

I managed pair signal desktop with Axolotl on a Librem5. The most annoying part was the QR code that the desktop app generates that you need to put in Axolotl. But as long as you can convert the QR code content to text you can just copy paste it.

The downstream version of gnome-calendar used in PureOS and some other mobile distros can sync with a nextcloud instance by setting it up via gnome online accounts.
The issue is gnome online accounts not supporting other caldav.
