You can write howtos, news roundups and other actually useful posts for days (and there's not much feedback), but whenever you do a "well, let's just throw some opinion + memories together and publish it" post it all of a sudden gets a ton of attention.

@linmob yup the direction that those comments took seems to be hackernews working as expected.

That is one of the reasons I stopped reading stuff there.
