Let me get this straight: If you break the law to get your kids into college, you go to jail and pay big fines. But if you break the law to get your kids into the country, you and they get a free ride?!

Not sure that I agree. As a long term strategy, yes it is bad, but that doesn't mean that you take it out of your toolbox if things to use. Stealing and intellectual property theft are also bad and protecting citizens from that is one of the true functions of government.
Using tariffs as a strategy to stop unfair trade practices can be seen as our government protecting is from another government.
