@erosdiscordia Yes, it's good, I agree (so I know...). Furthermore, maybe I will try also if I like to add one or another as an RSS-feed (in Thunderbird or whatever RSS-machine you use).

@cavaughan @shawnp0wers Furthermore, I think for credibility and more, I think org, newspapers, companies etc should and will set-up their own instances, as a way for them to add a level of self-certification.

@cavaughan @shawnp0wers Well, I can see your rel-me green check mark. Screen shot attatched. I think it says something at least. It tells you both have access to edit the code on the web site and access to edit the Mastodon account. And the content on the web site will tell something about you. All can of course still be fake, but give some credibility. And compared to Twitter, only some people had possibility to get the blue mark (pre-Musk time).

Hmm... should my comic have its own account on my nerdlings.net instance? Probably...

During COP27, we urge the Egyptian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all those held simply for peacefully exercising their human rights, implementing criteria set by local NGOs for these releases: fairness, transparency, inclusiveness and urgency. One of these prisoners is Alaa Abd El-Fattah, who is now on a water strike since the beginning of COP27. (thread)

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

Another design consideration re: Mastodon is that it works well for ephemeral asynchronous communications, but for many reasons should not be counted on as an archival resource. Media attachments are periodically purged and may not be available after a week, or a month, etc. While some servers may try to preserve content forever, this may be costly and unsustainable. Creators, researchers should treat this as an ephemeral resource and make provisions for self-archiving anything important.

@zak I use Joplin note-taking app. I have Standard notes as well, but it's really Joplin I use.

@madamscientist Same Rajino, good to meet you here! I'll talk more Baltimore memories another day. :-) Btw, the bookstore is in a big older red brick building, if my memory is right, but memory might fail.

@madamscientist Baltimore... I've been there once, for OFC Optical Fiber Conference, back in 2000. In the inner harbor area, I think it was called. You had a big nice bookstore nearby!

I have so far avoided to install on my ; I have only installed and . Should I dare to install FlatPak from the repository, will I meet any unexpected issue? Sw in consideration is .

I choose whom to follow. I cannot choose to lead anyone.

@zak So, it seems as at least to considerations on social media; why and what and for whom I publish on social media, and secondly we cannot trust social media will store for me especially when I not pay them (another issue is of course everything they store (and share) that I do not want them to store.

@shawnp0wers When I come to issues like word wrapping in Krita doesn't work, I tend to wonder am I stupid or is there actually no feature that handle this?
Right now I try a docking station with Linux Mint laptop, to same monitor as else macMini. Lid is closed on laptop, so of course the external screen should be the only active. Simple... but for me it is an ongoing struggle to find where and then how, and if, I best should configure screen settings. I'm not smart at all!

Pretty soon @TheConversationUS will have more followers on #mastodon after 9 days than we have accumulated on TikTok in 18 months.

Could you help us get to 1159 by boosting this toot and telling your friends about the work we do?

@Tay0 Which also means I am responsible to also follow those with other interests and other opinions. It is not mandatory to do it here of course depending on why we are here, but generally in society and for personal development and competence it is important that we all somehow interact with a diversity of people. I think. But your toot is correct, I only wanted to add this perspective.

@zak Maybe what isvon the social media is better seen as when you meet friends and unknown on an event; a seminar, a dinner, in the undrrground, on a concert etc; talking and it can be important and you save it in your memory but else it is not stored when the occasion is over.

@zak I am more hopeful the distributed management of mastodon is a strongness rather than weakness. But I am also in the opinion that for the personal ”content” that is public, a personal website where I have clear control and ownership is good and where I store public content. But sure, some sort of content is of course on others platforms. Maybe you should consider to run your own instance.
