Last night I set a new record for the length of time it took me to find a specific cybercriminal in real life. This one only took ten years, and hundreds of hours of research -- almost all of it in the wrong direction. I'm ecstatic, but also kind of mad at myself for missing key pieces of the puzzle that it turns out I had IN MY INBOX all along.
Anyway, the person in question is a big fish, and this going to be quite the story when it's ready. So, if I'm unresponsive to nudges etc for the next, er...week probably, you know why.
If you use a Windows or Linux device, it's vulnerable to a new post-exploit attack that can remotely install an undetectable backdoor at the UEFI level. Updates from just about every vendor available today. Impressive work from @matrosov and the rest of Binarly.

Hey folks, I come to you, hat in hand, looking for support. Financial support for #Fosstodon has dropped off recently and I totally get it - inflation is up and #Chistmas is around the corner. We all have more important things to spend our money on.
At the moment our outgoings are larger than our income, so our slush fund is dwindling away. Anything you can do to support us would be GREATLY appreciated. Here’s all the ways you can help:

On stream again, for the last Smash Bros Ultimate tourney of this college semester! I got 13th out of 22 this time — my best so far!
The last set of the tourney was really hype. We're probably going to be on Yeet Smash again :)

Had a 10-year old present this time. Not bad at all for his age, actually. InarenCommander's little bro 😄

Can't read my #howtogeek article without making an account. This is new. For as long as I can remember I could just read the articles by clicking on the mail links. Since they turned orange I was going to quit but the articles are really good. I have just reached 300 passwords in my password manager and I don't want anothet account. Anyone else get this? Other links don't ask for logon but won't scroll down.
In 2019, I broke the news that First American Title Insurance Co, the country's second-largest title insurer, had leaked on its public website hundreds of millions of documents related to mortgage deals going back to 2003. The digitized records — including bank account numbers and statements, mortgage and tax records, Social Security numbers, wire transaction receipts, and drivers license images — were available without authentication to anyone with a Web browser.
According to a report today from Newsday, First American has agreed to pay New York state $1 million for violating the state's cybersecurity regulation.
Not sure how the regulators reached $1m as an appropriate fine, but it seems small to me.

Hello there!
I boost a lot of posts, but I have a few things to say every now and then.
I am largely fine with boosting posts from people I disagree with even on significant, dividing issues. I usually don't, however, if they actively advocate for these ideas... so it goes :/
