I’m still kinda on the edge about this stuff. On the one hand, it’s definitely worrying if companies can get away with not paying people for artistic work, and that’s something that’s going to hurt a lot of jobs going forward.

But it also has high potential to make hobbyist projects better (like fan games and hacks), and to fill in for games that can’t be done with manual work for scale/practicality reasons. Like voices for hundreds of NPCs with complex dialogue options.

There are three kinds of timelines on here:

Home - Main timeline, shows all posts by people you follow, plus posts which include hashtags you follow

Local - Shows all public posts by all accounts on your server

Federated - Shows all public posts by all accounts that your server has noticed

On the official Mastodon app, Local is called "Community", click the magnifying glass 🔍 to see it.

If you're using Mastodon on a computer, there's an optional "advanced" mode available on your server's website.

By default Mastodon uses a simple single column, but advanced mode is a Tweetdeck-style multicolumn interface that lets you add as many columns as you want. This includes a special pinned hashtag feed where you can combine, require or exclude particular tags within a single feed.

Mastodon uses free open source technical standards, so all apps have equal access to all of Mastodon's features.
