On Mastodon the so called "Direct messages" are *actually* messages where the privacy setting is "visable for mentioned users only", i.e. users you "@"'
Now let's follow that to it's logical conclusion shall we… what if you want to talk to someone in private about a third person?
Do NOT "@" the person you want to talk about or guess what… you are talking to them as well!!! 😱
💡 If you write out their username without the first @, e.g "ruari@velocipederider.com" that OK.
Can I ask a favour?
I'm really grateful to be recommended as a follow, but can you also mention the website (https://fedi.tips) when you do so?
At the moment getting a lot of questions which are answered on the site, and it's difficult to keep up with every question. I'm happy to keep answering, but also afraid I'll miss someone's question.
If they know about the site from the beginning, they will have a chance of finding the answers themselves if I do miss their question.
Thanks 🙏

The 'House in The Hollow' isn't just about the mysterious Manor House.
Surrounding the Manor is a dark woodland called 'Braebrook Forest'.
Explore the woodland to discover the lost Manor House.

Update: 49,215 new users across different Mastodon servers since yesterday. Probably a lot of them are actually from yesterday. My crawler only runs once a day so I get a bit of a delayed view of things.
@bearmine for folks in the US, it might be easier to think of Mastodon as a country, and instances as states. You can just start in any state, each state has its own rules, and if you find that it’s not a good fit, you can move to a different state to have an experience that you like better. Your posts live in whatever state you’re a part of, but can be shared with other folks in other states.
Hello newer users, here are a few neat accounts I suggest checking out (shuffled except for the first one):
@feditips: excellent tips on how to use Mastodon and the wider Fediverse.
@bs: Bad Software ideas
@PetabyteStudios
@RL_Dane
@256: nostalgic screenshots and pictures relating to old computer technology
@mike
@Big_Diggity
@servant
Note that a number of these people are Christians (like me!). Only fair to say; it's your feed.
I follow more users, but these are some.
Quick tip: if you camelCase your hashtags, people who use screen readers will have an easier time with them.
So, for example: #twitterMigration or #TwitterMigration instead of #twittermigration
Okay, so... I have a bit of an announcement.
I've created a website for FediFollows which has all the accounts I've ever recommended (that are still working!) organised into nice topics and tags:
You can browse the main directory or the top 100 tags page. (Also considering adding an "all tags" page, if there's demand.)
Please let me know what you think! Any feedback very welcome 🙏
(This is why I haven't posted in a few days! 😅 )

have you met anyone from the #fediverse in person?
Hello there!
I boost a lot of posts, but I have a few things to say every now and then.
I am largely fine with boosting posts from people I disagree with even on significant, dividing issues. I usually don't, however, if they actively advocate for these ideas... so it goes :/
