We're excited to share a preview of a Framework Laptop with a new CPU architecture today, and it's not the one you probably think it is.
DeepComputingio
is creating the first partner-developed Mainboard, and it's powered by a RISC-V processor!

What's the oldest computer you have in ACTIVE use. It doesn't have to be every day, but not something that's sitting in a drawer you haven't turned on for a decade. Something you use. For me, it's a Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 1, which originally was released in 2012. I'm currently running #Zorin 16.1 :zorin: on it, and it's perfectly capable of most of my everyday tasks.

@mike Mine's a Dell D630 laptop, running the Haiku OS. I use that chunky boy for taking notes in college 😆
I don't know how old it is, but it says "PTA Approved Model 2006" amongst the labels on the bottom, so... I'm saying about 15 years and going strong!

@Big_Diggity Oh nice! I keep on trying to run it on my homeserver... maybe I'm messing up somehow. I keep on feeling negative about Matrix over this, maybe I shouldn't 😓

@arraybolt3 I would use more often *very* gladly, but unfortunately I haven't been able to get it running on my main laptop, a System76 with ...an Nvidia GPU. I got Haiku running on an old I have, though, which I use for school and notetaking very happily.

@arraybolt3 Ah, welcome to Haiku! Glad to hear another Fediversian trying it out. I first got into it due to @ActionRetro, who makes videos involving Haiku sometimes.
Tip, if you are dealing with an app whose windows you've closed but still just won't seem to quit, try Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Click-ing its Deskbar entry: haiku-os.org/docs/userguide/en

I don't currently own a @frameworkcomputer, but it's stuff like this that's making it feel like I will sooner rather than later. The ability to just change the laptop hardware configuration after the fact is unmatched by literally anybody.

@paulthenerd I can see it going overboard, like with Fortnite (so I've heard); I don't know about MultiVersus but I think the Smash Bros. series has done a good job. I think it is really cool taking a character you know and love and playing as them in a fighting game.
It has actually encouraged me to play some of the game series some of the characters came from.

I do worry about the future, though; if crossovers become too common I feel like characterization itself will begin to become fluffy….

@wonderofscience Since gravity is generally used to define "down", and you need a down to have a "height" (from where you are to the nearest large object downward (the "ground")), it makes sense that a low-gravity environment could make one less scared of heights.

Just reported a side-pane ad for a "seductive" see-through swimsuit. We'll see how long it takes for Google to not take it down.

Why don't we have standard Terms of Service that are used and reused everywhere?
I'm imagining a small number of flavors of ToS, not owned by the service providers that have us click through, but owned by trusted nonprofits and public service agencies and reused by service providers.

I'm thinking of Creative Commons-like agreements, but business agreements about providing a service, not just about licensing creative works.

Then, have the company that's implementing it customize the ToS by filling in a few fields at the start: their corporate name and address, how to contact their ombudsman, list of officers, something like that.

#intellectualProperty #intellectualPropertyLaw #clickThrough #TOS #termsofuse #licensing #saas #paas #softwareLicensing #software

Interesting, the terms of use that shows you before a test is different from the one on their website. The website one is last updated on January 2022, and the one that LockDown Browser shows you is March 2024. Notably the latest one has an section and the older one doesn't.
