@someunexpectedsparks Adding to the tutorial, in my case it seemed necessary to somehow turn off the phone's normal sms handling first, otherwise it said "No sms messages were found" after creating a new sms. It worked after I killed the "chatty" process which is normally running. Seemed like chatty was eating the sms messages before I could list them or send them. Were you able to send sms using mmcli when chatty was running?

The wishing the a merry Christmas and a happy GNU year, by SMS from the command-line. 😃 PureOS and @postmarketOS both running . The script on the Librem 5 is using mmcli commands to send SMS messages. @purism

From the telnet man page: "The source code is not comprehensible." In case you were wondering. 😄

Meh. Just wanted to login, but no, must first see this list of logos of the things I'm trying to avoid. Well, as long as the email option is still there, I suppose there is still hope. They don't own everyone, not yet. :-)

@purism I was unable to find the place where you explain how that funding will be used (allocating internal developer time to work on the apps, paying upstream developers…). Can you point me to that page?

Search engines should be the business of libraries, not companies.

@mntmn @ashimokawa@mastodon.technology The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world... that phones and laptops absolutely MUST be super-thin. 😉

@mntmn Yes! Knowing what the world looks like today, with nearly everyone locked up in the Google/Apple duopoly and many of them don't even seem to understand the problem with that. Given that I do understand the problem, I see that the world needs change, we need to take control of our technology instead of being enslaved by it. And I can afford to but a Librem 5 and a MNT Reform, how could I not do it? Of course I will do it.

Starting a phone call from the terminal on a Birch. This call is to the good old "Fröken ur" speaking-clock service telling us the current time in Swedish. Fröken ur apparently existed since 1934 but it was not until 2020 that I learned how to call her from the terminal. 😃 Thanks @dos for the tip that xdg-open could be used in this way. @purism

@johnfocker @purism I think you can't really compare to Pine64. Purism creates and improves free software. Pine64 just makes hardware. Many people seem to be running Phosh (by Purism) on their Pinephones. Nothing wrong with that of course, but it's not like things would be fine if nobody was working on the software. Working on software costs money. I appreciate that Purism is doing that work, and I'm pretty sure that Pine64 appreciates it as well, they do benefit from it. We all benefit.

@sir As people we can be expected to do the right thing, but we cannot expect companies to do the right thing, they will just do whatever makes money. Like he says in the end, we need to create laws to form a better society, companies will not do it no matter how much we shout at them, because their purpose is to make money. (except maybe those strange social purpose companies like @purism)

@sir That's very interesting, but when he says things like "You've got a responsibility to society", when he says that to a company like Facebook, I think that's a mistake. A company has a responsibility to its owners/shareholders. The company does not actually have a responsibility to society. You can say things like that to a person, but I'm not sure it's meaningful to say it to a company.

@purism @agx @dos which parts of software are most important to test right now, for someone who has a Birch phone and wants to help?

Imagine there existed a cooperative dedicated to bringing GNOME forward, and its members worked full time on polishing the ecosystem.

If the designers and engineers announced their projects, and a communication team kept you posted of progress.

Would you throw money at it? And how would you contribute?

🔄 boosts welcome
