There are all too often complaints about #Debian: "why does it have such old packages". There is a really lovely property of properly maintained stable distribution. The only changes made are to make it more stable and more secure, e.g. targeted bug fixes only. New bugs come with new features, or even more general, new bugs come with new code. So if a release of software is already addressing the need, then new features are just adding more risk of problems
@mnalis I totally agree that the jobs are important. Propping up highly inefficient, failing industries to save jobs is a problematic strategy, with a clear history to learn from. Skilled factory workers can make other things. Europe is already dominant in the railways industries, so if money shifts from cars to railways, that's an easy win. There are more opportunities like that, like we do pretty decent in wind mill manufacturing.
Aaahh now I get why #ElonMusk pivoted so hard to #politics! #Tesla is starting to fail as a company, making luxury cars while affordable electrics cars are in demand. And Europeans resent him getting involved in politics here, so avoid the company. Classic crony capitalism: use state power to prop up oligarchs. This is not innovation.
It goes to show you that it is at least as important to express one's opinions by choosing where one buys as it is to vote in elections.

Because <reasons> in #Austria right now, we seem to again have the debate about "chat surveillance" (#chatcontrol) on the (newly forming) government level...
The arguments and facts have not changed, so I am just posting my last public presentation slides [https://www.mayrhofer.eu.org/talk/secure-messaging-and-attacks-against-it/2024-08-29_Secure-Messenger-Attacks.pdf] and recording [https://media.ccc.de/v/26cd6d27-247f-5cf3-8adb-54c87bc372b2] again. Oh, and https://www.ins.jku.at/chatcontrol/ is still unchanged as well.
To our new (and old) policymakers: Maybe read/listen and then we can happily talk efficiently about any new ideas that might come up?
I keep reading media reports raising alarms about how the European auto industry is in trouble. I honestly see that as a positive thing. If the EU has fewer car makers, we'll have more incentive to invest in more efficient things like railways, walkable cities, cycling infrastructure, etc. And we'll be much less dependent on foreign fossil fuels that drive the wars going on.
@kriom yes, exactly. It is even in the file name, e.g. config.de.apk
@kriom I'm not sure I quite understand the question. One thing we could implement is letting the client download the whole package, so the server cannot see the metadata from the split APKs. Then locally, it would only install the split APKs that the device needs. This would keep the benefit of less disk space usage, but it would use all the bandwidth still.
We're starting to implement support for split APKs in #FDroid. #Google wants to gather as much data about its users as possible, so trying to hide info about language, country, device specs was not a design concern for them. It is central for us. We want the official client to leak as little data as possible to any server, be it ours, mirrors, or custom repos. We welcome input:

@noodlemaz I totally agree. In this case, there was already so many people highlighting that the attacker had a Syrian passport that it is important to point out that savior also had a Syrian passport. Perhaps that's just the story the local media in Austria. I don't know so much how this was reported outside of Austria.
We’re excited to announce that the Sovereign Tech Fund is supporting two key initiatives to improve security and transparency in the Java ecosystem with the @EclipseFdn
These efforts focus on integrating Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) generation into build pipelines and enhancing vulnerability management across all Eclipse Foundation projects.
@noodlemaz there is a lot of anti-immigrant and anti-foreigner sentiment in many places of the world these days, so it is important to point out that if someone is foreign or an immigrant, that has nothing to do whether they are a good person or not.
"Please, if something like this happens again, you have to do something. You can’t just stand there, take photos and film videos."
@drwhax it has served me well, at times, though I'm a bit out of the habit now. To try it, I just took a cheap wooden table and screwed wood onto the legs to make it the right height. Then I stuck it in a corner of a room, since it is a bit wobbly. The total cost was like 30€, ~20€ for a used table off the internet, and ~10€ for screws and extra wood.
The Debian Release Team is keeping pace: the first trixie freeze step (transition and toolchain freeze) is coming next month! https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2025/01/msg00004.html #debian #trixie
@lily @fdroidorg Is there something in particular that you will miss?
The fact that #FOSDEM is free to attend is also crazy. It makes the overall vibe different from other conferences. Sure you have to pay for travel and accommodation but if you have the money spare it's absolutely worth it especially if you want to meet specific people.
I've been four times, although only twice paid for by my employer at the time (one of the self-funded ones I travelled on my motorbike: 120 miles in the UK then about the same on Europe mainland to Brussels. Loved the experience)
