The announcement that the DEA was authorized to conduct covert surveillance on protestors got me thinking about how one could protect oneself against that kind of mass surveillance. In this post I give a quick overview of Stingray technology, the implications of its use at a protest, how aerial stingrays (“dirtboxes”) extends its mass-surveillance capabilities, and how the Librem 5’s hardware kill switches give you control over where, when and how you are surveilled.

1. Buy medication I never have bought or even searched for before at local pharmacy w/ credit card
2. Go to car, decide to test cellular by visiting my account on mobile.twitter.com
3. Immediately see ad for type of medication I bought!

No location tracking possible on this Librem 5 (used browser, not native twitter app), so either a crazy coincidence, or near-real-time reporting between CVS and w/ linking between my name, card, and twitter account.

@gbryant correction for the last two podcast, L5's m.2 slots are for communication m.2 cards. Sebastian Krzyszkowiak from @purism has commented that the m.2 slots are not usable for cards that do not use communications (with simcard and/or antenna).
