I've decided I'm going to compile a folder (on my phone probably) of things that make me smile. Jokes, cute pictures, nice things people have said to me. And whenever I end up with days like today, I can just take a minute to open it up and look around at stuff in it.

I used to have a physical box I kept stuff like that in, but I don't think I could bring it to work.

I recommend it for people who are easily agitated or having a rough day, so you can just take a moment and regain your bearings.

@christitus said it best: keep politics out of your social media if you want to prevent being canceled. No matter what you say, people will be offended, and anything you say can and will be held against you. Especially on Twitter

@kyle "Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say."

This article about Google's project to store and analyze millions of Americans' health care data confirms my suspicions about the Fitbit acquisition.

Many people who don't care about mass data collection because "I've got nothing to hide" change their tune when it's health care data.

@lunduke good to hear some one still stands for the facts in the time of emotion-boosting networks (be it social or media)

On one hand, tech companies violate our , capture massive amounts of data without consent, and process and categorize it w/ ruthless efficiency to ever-more-precisely target us with ads.

On the other hand, AARP keeps trying to sell my deceased dad life insurance.

Everyone, go check out A Heist With Markiplier! It's a series on YouTube, which also can be seen on Invidious (I found all 31 endings on the Freetube app). It's a choose-your-own-adventure style video series, and it's pretty awesome.

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men,
It is the music of a people who will
Not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drum,
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes.

Data isn't gold, it's uranium. Companies stockpile and refine it because of the great power it creates. But the industry is largely unregulated and creates hazardous by-products. When it spills it's almost impossible to clean up and when it explodes it leaves a wasteland behind.

I would like to have a moment of silence to commemorate the passing of the best bread we have ever had at my work. You will truly be missed, old friend. R.I.P. (Rip In Pepperoni's)

@lunduke
Do you think the free software movement would have a stronger presence without Linux (the kernel)? This seems like an obvious "no," but I would like to add that the Linux kernel is more responsible for spreading the term "open source" than "free software." As well, there would likely be stronger development behind the Hurd project, being the only free software kernel in town (besides the BSDs). Also, Linux is famous for leaving off the GNU, and the free software ancestry.

@lunduke not to mention, there wouldn't be any javascript

@lunduke if the web remained documents rather than applications, we could still have video services, but instead of streaming the videos directly, you would have a download link, and maybe a comment thread. Personally, I think this sounds like a better idea, because 1- no DRM, and 2- you download the video to view it. I think this would be better, since you have to wait for each video to download before you can watch it, which gives you more time to make sure you really want to see it. Thoughts?

was such a great idea. I genuinely feel happier, even though it's only been a few days

word of the day #3: Awestruck

To be awestruck is to be utterly amazed (as in, in awe of) something or someone.

@lunduke I'm on board! This is an excellent time for such a "detox", as I'm sure a lot of us are still moving toward open social platforms like mastodon, which is a great time to set a tone for our presences. Still going to try across all platforms, though!

word of the day number 2: amicable. An amicable person is friendly, peaceable, and good natured.

To kick off , I thought I'd do a daily word that has a positive social meaning. Today's word is: companionable. It means friendly and sociable. Nice and simple, someone who's easy to get along with.

Buckle up for some serious positivity, boys and girls.
