Though it frequently punches above my vocabulary and comprehension speed, is a terrific palate cleanser Netflix show that also offers some 日本語 practice.

The movie (Code: White) wasn't half bad for date night, either!

A new language theory just drops, courtesy of @ZachWeinersmith .

I, for one, regret the days where sticks cost two rocks.

Strange morning. I tossed two cups into the bathtub, and it was already 二杯 (ni hai).

I suspect 2023 will go down as the year an entire nation received Dodgers ballcaps for Christmas.

Halloween's a-comin', so here's something really scary: An asteroid that wasn't discovered until *after* it had already passed us.

(But we're working on a way to find these...)

Bonus: a classic but hard-to-find scifi doomsday movie you can watch online.

I'm thinking of blocking access to content on my site to anyone not running an ad blocker.

Thoughts?

Alright influenza, give us a few weeks to get this on board... then you a dead bug.

Yokohama has always been a Pokemon hotspot. They're IRL Vermillion City, and have the first Pokemon Center, but their presence is escalating at the moment.

Regular reminder: if your site or app doesn’t work in Firefox, it’s broken.

I lived through the “this site requires and/or is best in IE” era, and I’d rather burn it all down than return to that.

Pro-tip: Firefox does most things better anyway. Give it a spin and enjoy a less-tracked web.

If you made JAWS today, you wouldn't even have to kill the shark, just have everyone get tired of avoiding the water after a year or two and start insisting that it's actually fine to have a shark hunt the beaches every summer because it's only killing those too weak or old to swim away.

I'm missing my old network on the birdsite for this kind of query. Any #archaeology and/or #digitalarchives folks out there with recommendations on curating Ground Penetrating Radar datasets (DZT, DZX)? Challenges: they are v big & proprietary, we don't even have the software to read them in native format. I'm not even sure whether we should accept or recommend curation elsewhere.

On day 416 in Japan, I finally learned how to spell "怪獣" (kaijū). An arbitrary but fun milestone on the literacy journey.

I see NPR & PBS are leaving Twitter after being mislabeled as state-affiliated (or funded) media. I personally would love to see their counterpart in my area, NHK_News, follow suit.

So far, NHK has not received similar mislabeling as far as I can see, but who knows whether that might change if they ruffle the wrong feathers in this region?

I need your help…

NPR is leaving Twitter but they are planning to focus on Instagram

We need to tell them to join the Fediverse

Many of their journalists’ accounts, as well as their main account, haven’t been active on mastodon. Tell them how much we need them here. (In fact, they should have their own instance)

Use the link, tell NPR we are waiting for them here and spread the word far and wide:
