@mobian This is great progress. I find it amusing that alarms have only worked on pmos for years because the were *not* using systemd, but now they are changing over, so now alarms will not work anywhere until these changes are made.
@linmob thanks for this - Ill likely have the same issue (although mixing gnome and KDE apps seems to take up a lot of space with runtimes ...). There's a great space mapping program called baobab you can install (apt install baobab) and run (appears as Disk Usage Analyser) on the L5 in landscape mode that gives a nice overview of where disk is being used.
@lazarus @nextcloud Absolutely don't mind paying people for their work - however, with Sailfish I have the following concerns (correct me if any of these are wrong):
* chunks of the UI are not open-source.
* they use libhybris meaning many drivers are also closed source.
* they don't run mainline or close to mainline kernels.
Each of these issues results in some loss of transparency and ability to secure the maintenance of the OS and ecosystem into the future.
The L5, as already said by others, is practically a gnome phone.
Unfortunately this is a really nuanced space though - you have to deal with the following that will divide different groups:
- libhybris vs running mainline
- lack of support for various drivers when running mainline
- ubiquity of android and iOS apps, some of them fundamental to peoples jobs, money access and social lives
- components with no open-source equivalents (modem, wifi, bluetooth .. etc)
@linmob thanks for another great update! I was surprised to find "hedgewars" missing from your games list when I was looking over the weekend - only because its already in debian packages and because there used to be an Android port. I tried it on the L5 and while it worked well with mouse attached through a nexdock - I didnt see any way to use it with touchscreen only.
@linmob @purism I find these stories disappointing. For linux first phones, users are now forced to choose between a company that has questionable business practices or a company that expects the community to develop all software for free. Maybe these hostile policies around refunds are reflecting just how financially difficult it is to be in this niche market and pay for hardware and development?
@devrtz @gehrke_test @purism @mobian Is this without suspend?
@joao I just received mine, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the battery life (because of all the comments I had seen on it). I guess this is all down to work put into optimisation. Compared to the Pinephone, the in-use lifetime seems to be much better. Obviously, currently the Pinephone can suspend and stay asleep for longer, but I get the impression that once suspend support lands, the battery profile in the Librem 5 is going to be much better than the Pinephone.
@linmob Thanks for the updates. Amazing news for pinenote owners in the pine update. im typing this response from mine - installed the latest images + uboot yesterday and experience has been excellent so far.
@audiotube it does fix the issue! thanks for that!
@audiotube I tried this previously and really like it - but ... i'm getting yt-dlp errors for some videos and it seemed like the flatpak had its own version of yt-dlp that was slightly older than the most recent version, or am i missing something else here?
@Prudence@tech.lgbt @kop316
I thought my companies adoption of DUO would cause me a bunch of issues, but it seems to run OK on Waydroid for my PPP (not tested push though). After installing it I realised that actually you can find the HOTP private key in plain text where the app is installed (for Waydroid or rooted Android), and regardless if you press the codes button there's a hidden option for an SMS code anyway.
@zerodivision @postmarketOS thanks for another excellent episode and responding to my question. i have also been using pmos stable on my pp as my only phone for a few months but missed seeing the poll (i was using mobian before that - have been using just the pp for over 2 years now).
@Mek101 I was really surprised to read that the battery life was worse than the pinephone? I had previously thought that the SDM845 was just more efficient?
@linmob it's definitely not a failure - it's intended as a development device, and even then I've been using mine as my only phone for almost 2 years now.
I do find it frustrating that the Pine64 business model relies on all the software being developed for free by the community, and although the community has done a great job, I don't think that great stability or a solid user experience are going to be possible from people working just in their spare time.
@linmob Thanks for your update. Just wanted to mention for tablets that i've been using Ubuntu on an ASUS t300chi for about 4 years now - its basically a large tablet (x86) with detachable bt keyboard. It works great - touchscreen, stylus, (crap) camera, and uhdmi output all working fine.
@martijnbraam This looks great! Thanks for all your work on this - today I ordered food at a restaurant using my OG Pinephone via a QR code!
@linmob @PINE64 Thanks for your weekly updates, I'm pleased to hear your continuing for now!
I also noticed this https://fosstodon.org/@PINE64/107566967950259308 which I thought was interesting, but maybe it fell just between the last two weeklies
@linmob @normandc
Thanks for all the Wednesday updates, I've been following along with interest.
I have a Librem 5 on order, so I was concerned by the deleted post. Looks like this thread was the one moved (https://forums.puri.sm/t/librem-5-usa-read-before-ordering/14239/16) and perhaps wasn't Purism's fault this time.
