Summer solstice is upon us. Happy midsummer.

"Software is deeply intertwined with all means of production, communication, and travel. We are quickly approaching a society in which every action is determined, predicted, or prevented by an algorithm. This lack of tension, while injustice remains the status quo, is what negative peace [as described by MLK] looks like."

Being lazy I didn't want to walk 2 steps to the front room from the kitchen. To check for updates on my laptop. 😂

Thomas Drake (NSA-whistleblower) in the 'Nothing To Hide' Documentary:

"If you say you have nothing to fear because you have nothing to hide, so be happy, not worry. I say, okay fine. Turn over the keys to your car, your house, all of your passwords, all of your accounts, medical records. Everything. And I'll put them into a special secure lockbox, but I'm gonna keep it - *I* will keep it for safe keeping... "

"Noone was willing to turn over any of that information to me."

:)

@lunduke

Just donated a few doubloons to 3 projects that I use on a daily basis (& used before I even knew what FLOSS was) and figured t'was about time I showed them a little bit of appreciation.

I've often thought 'I really must donate to some of these projects' and then not got round to it, so using the Solstices and Equinoxes as a gentle nudge/reminder will hopefully mean that a few different projects get a little boost of cash and a wee show of appreciation throughout the year.

@joshfowler @purism

Hi Josh - from the looks of it (@purism 's post 'Day 2 - Gedit & Apt') they have sudo apt install available to use on the phone - "You don't need to use apt. But you can. Which is awesome."

It would be an odd choice to be able to 'sudo apt install' but not be able to sudo apt update/upgrade, so it very much looks like a fully functional standard 'apt' will be there to use.

:)

I like the idea. I think the main problems are visibility and simplicity (to donate).
I'd love to see donation buttons to important (and invisible) projects in @purism 's PureStore, in addition to a pay-what-you-want model for the apps. Creates visibility and simplicity 😀

Food for thought via @tuxdevices / @mike :

Hadn't occurred to me before but just did a quick interweb search for 'Solstinox' and...

...there's a game that was made with the Unreal Engine at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi called "Solstinox".

And also a game called "World's Nicht" being developed by a company called "Solstinox Games".

And there's also apparently a Ground/Dragon Legendary Pokemon called 'Solstinox'.

It is the master of the Season Quartet.

Does this legitimise the name or make it 'already taken'? :)

@phelion @dallin
The celebration part would be the Sonnwendfeuer (SunTurnFire), where some make BIG fires and enjoy 😉
Anyway, I think you'd need one catchy term like
Freedom Sunshine Fundraiser (FSF),
and paint it differently each quarter:
"The longest night ahead (northern hemisphere at least), the pockets of some projects are just as dim. While shopping for Xmas, think of them"
"Today, night and day are equal. Let's help those projects "in the dark" get equal funding."
"Rise and shine!" ...

@danielst @dallin
So it's kindof 'The Sun Turn Celebration' - I like that :)

(Incidentally, my favourite German word is 'Totentanz' - it's such a jaunty sounding word for a fairly macabre subject)

@eff

Sorry that it's a youTube link:

but it's the easiest way to show his 'take' on the Right To Repair and see the issues he's come up against in his quest :)

@eff
Hi - not sure if you are already in touch with Louis Rossmann - he's a very vocal supporter of The Right To Repair Bill.

He should be a great ally in this cause - he runs a store in New York that focuses primarily on board repairs, makes educational repair videos and has a good way with words too.

I'm sure he would be interested in talking about the EFF's perspective on this and what sort of 'legal-ish' arguments the lobbyists are likely to make to prevent the bill from going through.

@dallin

From @danielst 's gnu.org link on the usage of 'FOSS':

'If neutrality is your goal, “FLOSS” is better. But if you want to show you stand for freedom, don't use a neutral term.'

If I was writing it out in full I would tend to write 'Free/Libre and Open Source Software' so I have a preference for 'FLOSS' but didn't realise that the GNU Project preferred it's use over 'FOSS'.

It's a good question when you realise you don't know the answer!

Thanks for the links @danielst and @bjoern !
