Somebody should come up with a balance sheet that has employees listed as assets.

As my old boss used to say: "I don't get why programmers get paid that much. It's all just a bunch of for-loops!"

"Alphabet, Amazon, Facebook and Apple are among the top 10 contributors to Joe Biden’s candidate campaign committee in the 2020 cycle, according to OpenSecrets." https://variety.com/vip/house-antitrust-report-on-big-tech-less-would-have-been-more-1234796332/

@fribbledom Insight into outsourcing and ageism nicely summed up.

@fribbledom The big problem with this is that you can't compare lines of code across languages. There is also a mix of interpreted and compiled languages listed, so comparing object code sizes is also irrelevant.

One could find one of Capers Jones' books or papers with published average LOC per function point and do a (still flawed, but much more accurate) comparison of function points.

Got back on LinkedIn. What an advertising shitshow that platform has become. It's really more about capturing your data, pushing Microsoft products, pushing paid advertising, and a venue for job search/head hunting, than a professional connection site. I know that it was always that way, but the signal to noise ratio seems much worse than before.

I've noticed GitHub is going quickly in that direction as well. Everything Microsoft touches turns to shit. No wonder IBM took over OS/2 development.

0.4.5 is out 🚀 : source.puri.sm/Librem5/phosh/-

This one adds a torch/flashlight quick setting, improves support for external screens and switches to structured logging. There's also a rather long list of internal fixes as well as translation updates (thanks a lot for that)!

We are in the first stages of a long anti-encryption march by the upper echelons of the European Union, headed directly toward Europeans’ digital front-doors. eff.org/deeplinks/2020/10/orde

@chris I work on an open source repo in GitHub for a client. When Microsoft bought Github, I retained my account for client work on their repositories, but moved my own project repositories to notabug.org.

Work at Google. Work at Facebook. Work at Palantir. Heck, work at Phillip Morris or Exxon Mobil or Halliburton. But don’t you dare be proud of it. And don’t you dare tell me you’re working to bring about a better world for everyday people. Don’t you fucking even dare.

Today in #Berlin the pigs and german state are trying to evict anarcho-queer-feminist project #Liebig34. Solidarity with all those on the streets! Berlin for people not pigs!

The Google v Oracle ruling will be hugely consequential for software development. Even if the Supreme Court finds fair use, that may be small comfort for startups that can't afford to litigate to protect their right to reimplement APIs forbes.com/sites/martingiles/2

@claudius ...or discarding audience members who refuse to load Spotify.

If you like, use or even produce Podcasts, you should read this. And you should demand podcasts to be available via RSS. Having a show locked into Spotify or audible is _not_ a podcast. You're just handing them your audience for free.

@stephaniewalter@mastodon.design :-) People should do this when they work unpaid overtime as well. It would at least give you a nice paper trail that shows both you and the company were aware of the amount of extra exploitation involved.
