If you're still using Google for searching, you're doing it wrong.

There are now search engines that give you better results, with lesser(/no!) ads, in a clean interface, and are more cognizant of your #privacy.

Tried out the #zellij terminal multiplexer. Had a problem/question. Seems the community is only on #discord. After unsuccessfully looking for alternative forums gave up and registered a discord account. Verified mail. Verified mobile number. Captcha'd half dozen of times. Tried joining the zellij discord. Flicker. Website goes in reload loop. Account is now disabled because "We've found your account to be in violation of our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines." Fuck you, #discord!

And pretty please, free software projects, don't have your community in proprietary walled gardens like #discord or #slack you have no control over. You're doing your users a disservice. Use #irc or #matrix or whatever. There are enough free alternatives.

Thanks for listening.

Manufacturers should allow users to install any software on any device. Our open letter calls for legislation supporting this right.

@Tay0@fosstodon.org @requiem I agree that the 1980s crowds weren't as socially conscious. In early 1980s Indiana, homophobia was still big; even in a town the size of South Bend. I didn't get into the punk scene until the mid-80s, and there were still Nazi skins coming to the shows. I really think the internet's open paths to information allowed young people to expand their social consciousness. Our generation had to rely on parents, peers, or gated paths to information.

@Tay0@fosstodon.org @requiem I can't say I was too socially conscious in the 1980s either, but the younger people I've met on the scene today tend to be. Speaking of Austin in the 1980s, isn't MDC one of the most socially conscious punk bands?

@requiem Being a punk rocker in a small town, you have to get used to the idea of a cyclical community. This is also a college town, so it is probably more reliable that the punk scene will arise again.

The good thing about a punk community is that it also tends toward social responsibility.

@dazinism @mathiasx @cstanhope @requiem I grew up on an international community and spent 15 years of my early life there. and I have spent time at a ton of different communities in the US. I think the idea of "failure" is almost always misguided. Everything has a certain entropy and if we dont take that natural entropy into account when we are designing systems those systems will be naturally decay. The concept of the TAZ here I think is actually really important to consider early on.

It has become clear that the software world is basing fitness to hire too much on specific technology specialization.

Is it due to ageism? i.e., the fact that popular technologies change every 10 years (guess not data). e.g., I have written make files, but haven't touched ninja or even a tool like meson.

Is it productivity concerns? i.e., eliminate training time.

I would expect critical thinking to be a much higher bar to entry than technology.

🕵️ Intrusive surveillance technology is increasingly used during protests around the world and has a chilling effect on freedom of assembly.

We think it’s essential to monitor the use of such technologies, so we created a protest surveillance tracker ⬇️
