Those who live around northern Stockholm might know this sign, it's pretty big, you see it if you follow Norrtäljevägen into the city, just before you reach Roslagstull. It's below the old Roslagstulls sjukhus and Albanova, next to the new part of KTH called Albano campus.

It usually shows ads aimed at all the people in their cars heading into the city. This particular morning however, all the people in their cars got a special message about the badness of Microsoft and Google instead. 😄

Walked past this on my way to work the other day. It's like that The Sound of Silence song

"and the sign flashed out its warning..."

but wait, the sign did not say anything about the words of the prophets, instead it said "oops" and "Microsoft" and "your computer is low on memory, close Google Chrome" 😄

Okay, let's heed the warning from this sign: never use Microsoft or Google products, for anything, ever. Don't let them fool you. Don't but their "AI" bullshit either.

@anderslindberg jag tycker det är väldigt fel att skicka vapen samtidigt som Sverige fortsätter importera rysk gas. Det betyder att Sverige aktivt pumpar in resurser till båda sidor i kriget. Det borde Sverige inte göra.

@seanfobbe hmm ok so we have one machine generating text trying to mimic what a human could have written, then that machine-generated text is fed into another machine that tries to process it, perhaps producing some other text as a result. It all seems pointless, nobody learned anything.

However it's not like nothing happened. Money was probably paid to Microsoft and/or Google (they are the winners here), and lots of computational resources were wasted.

I guess we are all paying in the sense that those high-tech plagiarism machines are mainly useful for faking things, they are tools for fraud.

For those of us interested in communicating with other human beings, there is a price to pay in that we will be increasingly surrounded by machine-generated bullshit instead of meaningful communication.

The world needs things like honesty, peace and democracy, not auto-generated bullshit text.

" - I made a vital observation! 🎉 Proudly adding this to my list of things to brag about.

Much of my life may have been pointless but not all of it: let it be known that I did spend a significant amount of time with trial-and-error to find the exact time delay needed for the USB connection to the #Librem5 modem to break down. 😄

@neil it's the bloat. The bloat needs to be stored somewhere, there's no way around that. You can't just wave a magic wand and think the bloat will go away, that's not how bloat works.

@BengtBivrin ja precis, samma sak där. Vi vill att det ska finnas en lärare i klassrummet, som är där med eleverna under skoldagen. Skoldagen har en viss längd, klasser kan inte göras hur stora som helst, och en lärares lön kan inte trollas bort (även om vissa försök gjorts i den riktningen). Så skolan kommer att kosta, det kommer inte att magiskt bli billigare. Till skillnad från vägbyggen eller vad som helst där det kan ordnas bättre maskiner och färre människor då krävs för att göra jobbet.

@BengtBivrin ja det är en del av förklaringen men det finns en annan sak också: vården är ganska mycket en verksamhet där det behöver finnas människor, man kan inte rationalisera bort hur mycket som helst. Det gör att vården blir mer och mer "ineffektiv" så att säga, jämfört med resten av ekonomin. Andra saker blir i princip billigare med tiden p.g.a. effektivisering och automation, men inte vården (nästan inte i alla fall). Så vården skulle egentligen behöva en ökande andel av resurserna.
