@rene_mobile so perhaps it is not technically accurate to say "profit" as in dividends paid out to shareholders. Companies like Amazon choose to maximize stock price growth over paying dividends. But in layman's terms, that is still maximizing profit. Another good reference is the "B corp" movement, which aims to spread new legal entities where social benefit can be codified in a for profit company.

@rene_mobile The Corporation movie is one good breakdown thecorporation.com

Otherwise, it is pretty standard corporation practice, so just choose your favorite reference and dig in. In Austria, first thing I can think of is that different kinds of companies are required to have a minimum level of profit. In other scenarios, it legally defined board/officer control over the corporation, then the board/officers declare "maximizing shareholder value" is the goal, as stated in earnings calls

It seems to me that "modern" is the word that companies use to describe new features when they don't want to explain the actual reasoning behind why they made the change. "[X] offers a more modern way of storing local data".

@feld 3 vs 10 would make a big different. If I remember correctly, Amnesty Panic Button had a 10 second countdown. Also, Apple designs things in a very integrated way so they would have designed the hardware power button to also work for this use case. That kind of design integration rarely happens in the Android ecosystem. Google Pixel devices do it to some degree, but not nearly as in-depth as Apple does. I would love to see an Android device that applied the same level of polish as Apple does

@feld Apple's PR department is better at shifting blame to other people? My experience with Apple phones is via my mother, whose ringer switch is constantly being accidentally flipped off, so she's rarely reachable. She doesn't know what the switch does, it just gets accidentally switched somehow.

It is simply astonishing that companies are embedding technology into search engines that makes them vastly, vastly worse at finding accurate information.

One of the biggest sighs of relief I've had recently is hearing @doctorow say that podcasts are still resilient against . I had great fears that 's attempt to do so by paying Joe Rogan $100mil would be successful, but apparently, Cory Doctorow considers that attempt to be a failure. It is at least clear that Apple's efforts there have failed over the years. wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/s

It’s still a BIG problem that because of car manufacturing influence, most media & political energy goes to EVs, with not NEARLY enough going to fewer cars/less driving. But the priority HAS to be the latter, the part of the solution that will actually do much more public good. #EV #ElectricVehicles #cars #cities

"Microsoft wants to move Windows fully to the cloud"

Wow, this is a terrible, TERRIBLE idea! Time to consider regular donations to the Debian project...

Seriously folks, don't fall for this. This will effectively take our freedom to do anything on our computers without Microsoft's consent. We MUST NOT let this happen! I'd rather help half the fediverse to set up Linux than endure this.

@delta Has anyone tried just adding a "mark unread" to a messenger UX? Seems worth trying. Like just long-press message, and choose "mark unread". I could see it also implemented something like "reset unread position to this point".

We can set up communities with hard requirements to respect the community. This is why is legally structured to put first and foremost, via legal structures set up by Commons Conservancy.

What is happening with should not be surprising, it is a for-profit corporation. They are legally required to maximize profit. There are no requirements to respect the community that uses it. This is the danger of hoping that companies will do the right thing. Corp. officers will not take on personal liability to defend communities, because corp laws say shareholder profit comes first. showed this by selling out to . looks very ripe for the same.

For those who believe that the western liberal democracy is more effective than Chinese communism, consider that China is ahead of its goals while western liberal democracies are behind. @cobratbq I wasn't talking about confidentiality, I was talking about tracking unread messages. Or is there something I'm missing?

By 2024, the USB-C port will be mandatory for all portable electronic devices in the EU.

This means that you will soon be able to recharge most of your devices with the same charger, making piling up bundles of cables a thing of the past.

Not only will this make your life easier, but it will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and e-waste.

@vitriolix I didn't know did that. I find Slack's UX to be over-complicated and put too much emphasis on emojis. But I also haven't used it that much. I worry about going too much in that direction, but I would like to at least try a "preview then mark unread" UX in Matrix.

I like and both for group communications, but there are still many things that does much better. For example, I often want to quickly preview a message to see if I want to deal with it now. If not, then I leave it marked unread. Not possible all the messenger apps I've tried. That leads to slower response times because I won't open messages until I'm fully ready to deal with something more complicated. Maybe is the best direction for the long term.

A decade ago, did some extensive UX work on buttons using the power button. They used 10 presses as their trigger, and still got far too many false positives. Their conclusion was power button triggers were not workable. reached a similar conclusion back then. I guess missed that research: they shipped with a 5-press trigger, and now emergency services numbers are receiving record numbers of false calls:
