In case you couldn't tell I wrote it to be tongue-in-cheek, however, looking back at it it's actually surprisingly accurate! I've been used to daily driving GNU/Linux phones for half my life and I've never really seen Android/iOS as a viable alternative. Sure, some things they do better, but they're not the ones I really care about. My short time when I carried an Android device around because N900 was getting too old to handle the Web well was quite frustrating; I was glad it ended soon enough!

I tried - I had carried an Android device as my secondary phone for some 2-3 years in the past, and I have had an iPhone sitting in my drawer for years, and I can see that they’re just not up to the task. Simple things remain utterly confusing or even impossible to achieve with these devices, and they seem unable to provide even the basic feeling of control that you would expect over a device you’re supposed to own. Maybe their third decade of existence will bring the much needed improvement!

I wonder: will Android or iOS ever become a viable alternative to Linux phones?

Apple started quick and announced the iPhone just a few months after a GNU/Linux smartphone. Google took a bit longer with Android - but now they both had nearly 20 years, and yet they're still nowhere close to being able to replace GNU/Linux phones. Will they ever up their game and finally create a device worth switching to? I have my doubts, but we’ll see.

@janl @danirabbit We're getting a steady stream of LLM-generated or assisted article pitches and now a bunch of pitches for "projects" created using LLMs. I doubt we're seeing as much nonsense as y'all are, but it is so draining.

No. We don't want to publish something written by or assisted by your stochastic parrot.

No. We're not going to write about a software project that you threw together with LLMs and will probably grow bored with when the novelty wears off and/or you run out of money for tokens.

If there's one message LLM users need to hear very loudly, I think, it's this:

"No, you didn't create this. You summoned it. Nobody asked you to, but you did it anyway. You aren't getting a cookie for it. Nobody will be proud of you for doing it. Go away."

@janvlug @fisherdude @valhalla The early Evergreen batches (pre-1.0.6) are more susceptible to power supply noise, and pre-Evergreen batches had very poor GNSS reception. The majority of produced phones are 1.0.6 and should have it working well though. On the earlier ones, reducing power consumption (display backlight/blanking, background CPU usage etc.) may help. Of course uploading fresh AGNSS data to the module will tremendously speed it up too.

What's next: land the last GLES3 fixes (and submit i.MX8QM), upstream the compiler, GLES 3.1 and beyond, and better perf tooling.

Thanks to everyone who reviewed and tested along the way. 💙

Years in the making - worth every step.

Some things are worth the wait. 🐢

Tonight at #XDC2026 I gave a 5-minute lightning talk: "etnaviv: good things take time" - a look back at a year in which the Vivante GPU driver in Mesa finally reached two milestones that once felt very far away.
