I have owned a #Librem5 for almost 5 years. Every year it has gotten a little bit better in terms of funtionality. It is now at the level of really quite excellent. Not perfect, but a real, useable, fun, freedom-respecting device. #linuxmobile
@fisherdude out of curiosity, how is the GPS / navigation situation on the Librem?
on the pinephone it's the biggest thing where I tend to rely of friends with android phones, but that one also have significant hardware issues, and I hope that the more expensive linux phones are better?
@valhalla Great question! It is not perfect, but the #Librem5 GPS works - it just takes about 2-4 minutes depending on cloud cover and, yes, it is annoying to wait. But, once it works, it works. I really like the turn-by-turn navigation of #puremaps as well. I can also use offline maps from #openstreetmaps which I really enjoy. I cannot tell you the software is always perfect but I deal with the warts for the freedom and, like I said, it keeps getting better.
@janvlug @fisherdude @valhalla The early Evergreen batches (pre-1.0.6) are more susceptible to power supply noise, and pre-Evergreen batches had very poor GNSS reception. The majority of produced phones are 1.0.6 and should have it working well though. On the earlier ones, reducing power consumption (display backlight/blanking, background CPU usage etc.) may help. Of course uploading fresh AGNSS data to the module will tremendously speed it up too.
