A few months ago, Microsoft decided to collaborate with Google and drop its web engine in favor of Google's.
Earlier this week, Google blocked all ad blockers, and now Microsoft has de-listed UBlock Origin (a powerful ad-blocker). Without real choice, monopolies will dictate what you see and do on the Internet.
Real choice comes with Free/Open Source Software.
KDE has adopted non-proprietary and decentralized instant messaging services and is now running its own community-managed instance of Matrix
KDE is now officially using Matrix for collaboration within KDE! Matrix is an open protocol and network for decentralised communication (which means you can follow and comment from a different instance of Matrix where you already have a presence), backed by an open standard and open source reference implementations for servers, clients, client SDKs, bridges, bots and more. It provides all the features you’d expect from a modern chat system: infinite scrollback, file transfer, typing notifications, read receipts, presence, search, push notifications, stickers, VoIP calling and conferencing, etc. It even provides end-to-end encryption (based on Signal’s double ratchet algorithm) for when you want some privacy. https://squeet.me/objects/962c3e10e38e7cf4ed8190091da003199908b4b6
Black Hat drama this week shows the risks in creating a machine/process w/ the power to censor a group for personal views. Always starts w/ dangerous/unsympathetic views, inevitably expands to censor other groups based on shakier grounds. #slipperyslope
Obviously I would never tell someone else what to think or what to say. Ever.
Just the same I would consider it a personal favor if, when responding to my posts... if folks could keep the language both "safe for work" and "appropriate for kids."
I like to keep my feed safe to read and see by everyone -- all walks of life, all ages, etc.
Thanks everyone!

Did you know that you can check out source code for things Purism works on (such as Librem One applications and bits relating to the upcoming Librem 5 smartphone) right from https://source.puri.sm?
Source code should be Free.
That's just how we roll.
@chris @amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz No, they didn't really do some testing. They, or that former employee of Purism (Sean), just summarized some of the mishaps of the first days the service went public, in a campaign that maybe should have been labelled "public beta".
There is more badmouthing in it than real privacy/security advice.
The interesting thing is, how will the service develop in the upcoming months, not how well did the first 5 days go.
@sir @amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz I would be surprised if you would have to remove these apps. They will be in the app store, just so the app store will have something you can install.
You'll not be forced to use any of their apps and services.

If you think the reason Internet companies voraciously snarf up your data is because their services are free, allow @techdirt to introduce you to the telcos:

@Gargron only saw Tröt! as imperative verb, and like it a lot. Unfortunately there is no good noun counterpart (Getröte?). Einen Beitrag tröten
Is fine with me 😀
First, the high scores. Only @Reddit earned stars in every category, and @apple and @GitHub earned stars in five out of six categories.
If they can achieve this level of transparency and accountability, it’s reasonable to expect other companies to also meet that standard. https://t.co/k22w1kAV0c
Of the 16 companies we assess, twelve publicly endorse the Santa Clara Principles on Transparency and Accountability in Content Moderation, indicating increasing industry buy-in to important standards of transparency, notice, and appeals. https://santaclaraprinciples.org/
