Non-tech project of the new week. Spin another bobbin of yarn from this really nice BFL roving. When that’s done, I’ll ply the two together and get started on the next bunch. I’ve got some plans to probably use this in a cardigan at some point.

Renamed one of my projects today, and moved the hosting to GitLab. I'll be updating everything over the coming days but for now here's `staart`, a tail-like library/binary crate using only #rust stdlib. Staart is "tail" in Dutch, and since I wrote this while living in The Netherlands I think that's more fitting than the old project name.

Work has kept me quite busy in the #Python and #Bash realms and as such I have had almost no time to work on any #Rust projects. Hoping to have some time to change that soon. I may even do Advent of Code super late just for the practice.

If you happen to be using Azure Active Directory Login for Linux in your Azure VMs, do not update the aadlogin package. It is broken for both Ubuntu and CentOS. The change to aad_certhandler in the latest version, released 2020-12-15, will break your AAD login. Rolling back to the previous version works for now.

Got most of the way through a migration from Fedora based TemplateVMs to Debian based ones. Having been at this whole Linux thing for quite a while it doesn’t really matter that much to me whether I’m using dpkg or rpm, but in general when the majority of machines I must manage for work are on a specific platform my personal use follows suit.

Today, the first production EV charger was provisioned into life using the security-focused service infrastructure I was originally brought to The Netherlands to design and implement. Now that this milestone has passed, I may have some time to finally do a write up of the process so perhaps others can reduce their IoT attack surface, and move devices into line with the principle of least privilege rather than the Everyone’s An Admin philosophy that seems to guide so many places.

Went to the thrift store for a TV stand. Returned with a TV stand, a vintage spinning wheel, and a vintage sewing machine. All for less than €60. Not mad about it at all.

Finished the fingerless mitts I started in... August? Been way too busy lately. Anyway, this is all handspun yarn. My friend did the white on the wheel I bought her, and I did the brown with a drop spindle I made out of wood from a big oak tree damaged in a hurricane years back.

My fiancée said we must have a tree. This was accomplished by tying one to my bicycle and walking it a few km home. Kinda made me miss my truck 😂

Back when I put #QubesOS on my desktop full time I apparently used my #Tails USB stick. Oops. I'll be fixing that today, and also thinking about how I change my device usage patterns for 2021 when my #Purism machines (Librem 14 and Librem 5) ship.

All the surprises came up today. Got em solved, one and all, but some of the issues were on me and that’s not a feeling I’m terribly used to, or fond of. Need to improve my test coverage on some of these things for sure.

This week’s dev-a-thon has been extremely productive and successful. My team is absolutely crushing every task I delegate. This has freed me to set process and procedures with the rest of the management team to reduce load on everyone. A lot of what has been implemented is focused on #security and we’ve made some huge improvements.

Crushed it.

Tomorrow will be an all day dev-a-thon spanning the full range from #embedded to #cloud on a tight schedule before a key player goes on leave for the rest of the year.
