Traditionally #FreeSoftware projects are driven by developers or for profit companies (sometimes governments funding specific projects). Users without programming skills usually can't influence the direction of a project. People talk about developers not getting paid for developing Free Software and users demanding more from volunteers. I think we have to rethink about this model and try to address this disconnect. @prav and https://codema.in/debphoshfund are trying to address this.

Thinking of starting a “50 for FOSS” pledge campaign.

If you:

- Work in tech
- Can comfortably pay all your bills
- Regularly use free/open-source software

Then on the 5th of every month, you choose a piece of software you appreciate and find a way to pay $50 for it. Ko-fi. GitHub sponsorship. OSS collectives. Open an issue in the repo or email the maintainer if you have to.

We have to insist on paying for the software we use.

People really don't realize how utterly dependent modern surveillance is on the idea that everybody is carrying a phone — which is always tracked. Their car has a cellular modem in it — which is always tracked. 99% of investigation is one guy and a search box. If you're not low-hanging fruit, you aren't gonna merit the Eye of Sauron of manual, well-resourced, focused team attention—and if you did, you probably planned ahead for it, right? Because it's not a mystery what would get you on Santa's Naughty List.

Anyway, the point is that even in a big city, the phoneless guy in a "covid" mask is going to be invisible to anything less than that exhaustive manual investigation — at least for a few more years. That may go away once they start networking all the cameras and having AI start trying to match up clothing sets moving from camera to camera, butthat capability is hard to hide, so it'll be in the news. And it won't work that well in places with less camera density and, perhaps, for people who wear the most-common outfits (the visual equivalent of a "shared fingerprint").

Remember: Phones are useful, but dangerous. And the people who will still wear covid masks to the beach are helping to normalize facial obscurity—regardless of their intention. Don't be mean to them. Encourage them to wear them everywhere. For passport photos. In police booking photos. At the customs desk. Family portraits! The sky is the limit—let them push the boundaries so that you don't have to.

The Web is taken.

They control your data: Servers can change anything you send at any time: E-mails, medical records, private family pictures, social media posts, orders etc. You won't even notice it. Not only they can change, but you can also create new content as if they were made by you. Your history is written by them.

Servers do too much: They convinced us we don't have enough processing power and moved all the logic from our applications into servers. Even though a phone has an equivalent processing power than a single server today, we believe we must use complicated server architectures to achieve anything in the web. Phones are the cloud.

Everything is a rental: You don't own your domain name. It's a rental. Your server is a rental. Your digital certificate is a rental. You don't own anything. Your digital identity is a rental.

Data Silos force you to stay: Moving is too hard. They profit on making things just difficult enough to keep your around. After all, it's just 9.99 a month.

Enter the Verifiable Web

Own your keys, own your content. No one can write for you. No one can change what you write.

Sign everything you send. Every little like, every little key press. If it wasn't signed, it didn't happen.

Verify everything you receive. Trust the signer, not the servers in between.

You decide how data gets to you and where it stays. Your digital history is assembled by you.
