Old records on a vintage Victrola 👴
@kirby
And only two of us weren't aware of that — until today. Everyone's just making quick buck! 😲
@newt
You know me, I'm all for using TUI software and computers that are well beyond "not current", but this "new software is more bloated than old one" take could at least do mIRC more justice by comparing it to a… somewhat more comparable specimen — in equal environment, not "I just launched this and it only uses 50 megabytes, but it would soon inflate to 1.5 gigs" — why?!!! No, it won't!
@newt
Like I said, I don't think it's not bloated, it could probably be optimised more, but in the ballpark of 50 megabytes I think in a way we're bordering the uncertainty of measuring equipment — is it right to compare local software, the startup of which is probably its peak RAM usage? I don't think so! Is it right to compare networked software that can only handle unencrypted connections and can't do any image decoding and processing on its own to the one that can do graph plotting? Also no
@newt
Man, it seems we're both long in the tooth! It can even do graphing nowadays: https://www.ghacks.net/2020/01/17/windows-calculator-will-get-a-graphing-mode-first-look/
Is it not worth 50 megabytes?
@newt
I'm not knowledgeable enough about how Windows software works nowadays, it used to have resources stored right in the executable files and parsing those required reading them whole, in case with mIRC, again AFAIR, everything was stored in the external files.
But what's more important: your question has nothing to do with mine — is Windows Calculator likely to allocate any more RAM? No, I don't think it is — its startup is its peak RAM usage, it affects the working set — that is the point!
@newt
I would very much mind if an RSS reader peaks at 2 gigabytes when refreshing feeds, but whether a GUI calculator requires 24 or 36 megabytes on a system that meets modern Windows requirements — who gives a shit? 🤷
@newt
It's heavily implied here: "no input", but do they really expect for calculator to start allocating memory by gigabytes as soon as they start e.g. adding numbers up? 😲
Not that I don't think that recent versions of Windows Calculator aren't bloated — they sure are, but direct comparison only makes sense with similar kinds of software.
@newt
Such threads always amaze me — because comparing "every metric" requires at least understanding what those metrics mean, but this is pure gold — comparing software such as calculator that has been just launched and that is unlikely to allocate any more memory ever to a networked software that has already deallocated all the pages it only needed at start up, but is not unlikely to allocate more if it starts being actively used 🤦

> you can actually sometimes passthrough your gpu to the VM and play virtualized windows games at native speed
Is this still VT-d or is it something new? The former used to only be available on Xeon-capable motherboards and AFAIR, only for Nvidia cards. Time flies by — that's for sure, but has it since become a more mainstream tech or have they reinvented the wheel under different branding?
@metallcorn
Серьёзно, там их нет? 😲
На интуитивном уровне казалось, что вот именно там должны быть.
@romin
Don't know that either — it's probably like Brutal Doom, but with bug gun… bugs… lots of bugs — both in the game engine and the insects 🤔
It's been two and a half years that mstdn.ca has been a thing.
If you see this, please reshare it and star it. I'm curious about the reach we have.
Consider this a research project!

Конечно! Не нужно нас бояться — мы ведь даже с дивана подняться не всегда можем, что уж говорить о ситуациях, когда нужно помочь соседу записать хип-хоп альбом 🦭
