The Co-op Cloud Public Beta is here 🥳 🌻 💃
The project is stabilising and more democratic tech collectives are joining in. We've got the full report on the blog https://coopcloud.tech/blog/beta-release
A HUGE thanks to all the wonderful people who helped us get this far.

If a company actually cared about your privacy and wanted to advertise its products, could it do so ethically? We have been thinking about this issue heavily at Purism.
We value people’s privacy and want to protect it not just with our products, but with how we market our products. Let us know, we are counting on your feedback!

"In the wake of Trump's ascendancy to the US presidency, this episode analyzes the toxic mix of white nationalism, Islamophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and anti-migrant hysteria that is coalescing into a movement that has, in turn, sparked more interest in anti-fascist organizing."
@lightweight @LovesTha The work of flagging the evil corps has already been done for us to a large extent. So a good starting point is with a list like this → https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/ALEC_Corporations I copied that list into a file, as well as this list of corps that have left ALEC → https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Corporations_that_Have_Cut_Ties_to_ALEC I grep both lists.
It always makes me sad to see otherwise sensible, talented, thoughtful people (at least based on their posts) who nonetheless invest their minds in aiding (working for) objectively evil (mostly) tech corporations.
Those include (but are not limited to) Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, & Facebook. Seeing you work for one deeply affects the esteem in which I might hold you & makes me question your self-awareness, judgement, and conviction to the values you otherwise seem to portray.
Nice to see this: https://www.newsroom.co.nz/are-devices-in-school-doing-more-harm-than-good it certainly makes a similar recommendation (albeit softly) that I think we need, too: https://davelane.nz/different-approach-digital-technology-schools
Does anyone know of research into utilizing magnesium combustion-induced hydrogen splitting for utilization in direct hydrogen iron reduction/steel-making?
On a whim I ran some numbers, and the results are a little mind blowing.
Thread to follow!
it makes me deeply uncomfortable that a huge chunk of the left has decided that any critique of the pharmaceutical industry makes you some kind of ignorant, right-wing conspiracy theorist. the psychiatric industrial complex is a horrifying thing and the DSM has and will continue to perpetuate evil, greed, and oppression. it’s only getting worse and will continue to until the profit motive is removed and we put an end to diagnosis mills once and for all.

@normandc @mastobikes plus wrote this (but slightly outdated): https://tech.oeru.org/installing-nextcloud-and-collabora-office-online-docker-ubuntu-1604 - now I deploy OnlyOffice rather than Collabora. It's all #FOSS and free of any license costs. Can be hosted on a $20-$40/month commodity VPS...

DC is charging a higher vehicle license fee for extremely oversized vehicles, to discourage the use of these stupid elephant cars that are so deadly to pedestrians.
California law explicitly bans San Francisco (and other cities) from doing this. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-05-26/a-new-way-to-curb-the-rise-of-oversized-pickups-and-suvs

My friend Jeff Elkner has already bought his ticket, and is prepared to fund the whole trip himself, but it would be most gratifying to support what he is doing.
Azure and AWS are both trying to make their customers dependent on "certified consultants" because they know those consultants (who've paid Azure and AWS for certification) will only every suggest the services they're certified for to their customers. Even though they' re more expensive & are *all about lock-in * with proprietary services and APIs. Build your business logic around either offering, and you have to fully rewrite it to shift to a different provider. Huge cost! Don't get sucked in!
Also, in my experience Azure services (like AWS) are all "batteries not included". Want to know how much you've racked up this month using Azure services? You have to *pay* for an extra service to have that. Otherwise you have to *request a report from Azure support* which takes several days. Digital Ocean (like the other providers in that tier) tells you your current account balance for all the services you're using on every single page of their admin interface. And that costs $0.
Seeing people in the Fediverse promoting Microsoft and their Azure services... I have to say that in my experiences with MS Azure, it's focus is locking you into its proprietary services. They're just like Amazon's AWS. Both are 10-15 times more expensive than non-proprietary commodity services offered by myriad providers. We got better performance & a 90% cost reduction by shifting our #FOSS services to providers like DigitalOcean, Hetzner, and Linode among others.
