I work in healthcare, some of our staff work closely alongside the Ambulance Service and I've never heard of a unit being delayed by a protest.
In areas which are busy with people (including sports/royal events) the service has contingency plans including the use of paramedic bicycles which can get around a crowd a lot quicker than any motor vehicle (these bikes are often widely used in pedestrianised areas of town for routine duties outside of special events)

Tired of working on software at companies that are riding legacy code into bankruptcy. I'm always hopeful that companies will learn that continuous improvement can't be achieved via forever refactoring, but still find them clinging to legacy code like it was created by magic and the magic is lost. (This is exacerbated when the original creates move into management and/or leave the company leaving no developers who understand the architecture or have the domain knowledge.)
Folks I work with in Apia, Samoa, have just put out descriptions for two education technolgists/learning designers... have a look if you're interested in a change of scene!
I've never been very good at bullshit. I wonder if that has had an adverse effect on getting a new job? Of course, I'm very aware that my age is working against me.
OTOH, what do I have to bullshit about? Is this just #impostersyndrome talking?

In 2018 the Supreme Court handed down US v. Carpenter, a landmark decision which ruled that location data collected from cell towers is protected by the 4th Amendment—meaning law enforcement can’t get your location from your cell carrier without a warrant.https://www.eff.org/cases/carpenter-v-united-states
Last fall, Apple & Google took action against data broker X-Mode after we learned of its ties to US defense contractors. Last month, Google kicked another location data broker from its stores—Predicio. These moves help users, but they’re not enough. If you're unaware of the term, teamicide, #Peopleware #DeMarcoLister use it to describe any management actions that prevent a team from forming or lead to the dissolution of a team. The premise is that developing a great software system requires a self-formed, cohesive, team. 'Self-formed' is a key, because even though DeMarco and Lister prescribe some team forming actions, they caution that management can't create a cohesive team.
One of the most important items in #Peopleware #DeMarcoLister is the list of managerial actions that are teamicidal:
- annual salary or merit reviews
- management by objectives
- praise of certain workers for extraordinary accomplishment
- awards, prizes, bonuses tied to performance
- performance measurement in almost any form
Posting this in a company local newsgroup once, invoked interest from HR. :-D
Despite all my personal interest quoting, #WorkWontLoveYouBack #SarahJaffe only has a single chapter on tech work, and many of the quotes apply to other jobs. #Peopleware #DeMarcoLister also talks about the cons that workplaces apply to get you to feel like the work is more important than it is.
"Beyond their expected loyalty to their own CV, the programmers were encouraged to consider themselves part of the family, and to work hard to pul their own weight within it" "a lot of one-upmanship about who could work longer." #WorkWontLoveYouBack #SarahJaffe
