I highly recommend anyone getting started with GTK/GNOME app development starts with GTK4 at this point. GTK4 performs better, makes it easier to make custom widgets, and simplifies a lot of things that were more complex before.

If you start with GTK4, you also won't need to worry about porting later :)

This isn't a criticism of the free, open source, software model; it's a cynical look towards software hiring. It used to be that education or experience was enough, now you need demonstration of knowledge. Does any other discipline require that? Do employers look for contribution to open source hardware projects before hiring electrical engineers?

There's something very wrong with the state of the art in software development today. Proliferation of languages/libraries is one of the causes.

Sometimes I wonder if having an online resume of unpaid contributions to open source project is just a measure of how willing you are to do unpaid work. At every company I have worked at, there is an expectation of unpaid overtime built into project schedules. Most entry-level employees come in trusting the company line and believe the schedule actually matters. Hint: if the company can't produce hard data to back the schedule date, it's a lie.

Not having the "right" buzzwords on your resume keeps you from working for idiots.
