Each Mastodon instance has its own optional custom emoji. They work across the Fediverse, and you'll sometimes see them on other people's posts.
Custom emoji appear in your instance's emoji picker (😂) just above the standard emoji.
If you have good ideas for custom emoji, try asking your instance admin if they could add them
(You can find your instance admin by clicking on "About this server" at the bottom left of the screen)
To carry a smartphone from big tech is now to carry a passive surveillance device on your person. You are paying a thousand dollars to have your privacy violated. its why you should choose a device from @purism as you dont have to trust purism at all you can trust the code as it should be (i do trust purism by the way but just saying). so stay away from all things google and the all seeing i. https://edwardsnowden.substack.com/p/all-seeing-i

#Mastodon have released an official statement regarding the #TruthSocial affair: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2021/10/trumps-new-social-media-platform-found-using-mastodon-code/
If you don't already know: Donald Trump has launched a social media service based on Mastodon. However, his team didn't comply with Mastodon's licence which orders licensees to publish their forks' code.
This week, Mastodon have sent a letter to Trump's lawyer demanding the publication of Truth Social's source code. If that doesn't happen within a month, the licence may be revoked.

Using Manuskript to Write a Fiction Novel
http://gedakc.users.sourceforge.net/display-doc.php?name=manuskript-novel-writing
A decent intro to a free software writing tool. I use this to write fiction, but it could just as well be used to create non-fiction, blog posts, etc.
This article, on US spy agencies' self-awareness of the legal weakness of their drone-killing program, is the first fresh document I've seen published from the archive in years.
@attackerman is always worth reading: https://t.co/NRwCr7eBRu
This looks like it produces a global (hash) database of people's iris scans (for "fairness"), and waves away the implications by saying "we deleted the scans!"
Yeah, but you save the *hashes* produced by the scans. Hashes that match *future* scans.

It is crucial to bear in mind that the industry's problem is not data "protection," it is data COLLECTION. Mass surveillance must be recognized as a crime, not a business model. https://t.co/L7Bu9otMWt

Purism's App Developer, Dorota Czaplejewicz shows how she used PulseAudio to play sounds from the laptop on her #librem5 📢

Insightful. We can't repeat often enough that @mobian , @debian , @postmarketOS , @manjarolinux and others would not be where they are now, without @purism adopting a cooperative upstreaming policy. We would wager that everyone purchasing a (true) Linux device now, benefits from your investments. There is plenty to criticize and nag about you 😝, but you are doing the whole FOSS community a service that could not easily be replicated by volunteers.
