#Starchart now federates!🎉

Starchart is a software forge spider and search engine that federates and periodically publishes its index. Simply put, Starchart is the decentralized, non-#GitHub alternative to https://awesomeopensource.com/

Wow so the #Apple lobbyist speaking at the @EU_Commission #DMAWorkshop on #AppStores refuses to answer my question why his company should get to decide what software runs on their devices -- after he spent 15min doing PR blah blah about how #iPhone is the best. 🤦

It's official, we have a Chartreuse shortage. Tough times ahead.

“Where does a man get inspiration to write a song like that?” Grace Kelly asks in Rear Window, overhearing a neighbor’s new melody. “He gets it from his landlady once a month,” Jimmy Stewart answers. (ht Stephen Marche goodreads.com/book/show/651470)

Free software phone problems: When at home, getting a missed call causes my stereo to start playing music.

This past few months at the other site has me convinced organizations should 100% do whatever they need to do to build outreach capacity independently from social media sites.

Make a newsletter, a zine, a big Signal group, whatever you want. But it should be yours, so it can't just be bought or taken away.

From a discussion on a major #HigherEd forum by a senior campus leader,

"We are a #Google school…"

If the comment was, "We are a Coca-Cola school," I suspect we'd hear concerns: marketing products to students, corporate influence in #HigherEducation, even health & safety/quality (all BTW applicable to Google).

If you believe Google (or #Microsoft, #Adobe) is a "global standard," the same case can be made for Coca-Cola (Pepsi). I doubt stating such an alignment would be so promoted.

The real future part is that I can now also add my phone (PinePhone) to the mix, sharing keyboard and mouse between all 3.

And now I have yet another way to be confused about which machine I'm working on / saving my work on.

Set up Barrier to share keyboard and mouse between my desktop (yes I have one) and my laptop. Had to generate the SSL cert manually as per github.com/debauchee/barrier/i and also manually make the server config as per github.com/debauchee/barrier/i (subbing the actual client and server names for the all-caps placeholders there). It's been about 15 years since the last time I did keyboard/mouse sharing, but it still feels like the future!

Node.js is everywhere, and now we're on Mastodon 👋

My talk Open Source Software and NASA is now posted! It was a lot of fun to give the talk and thanks goes to all that contributed to it.

With so many places having done layoffs lately, I wanted to mention the US Digital Service is hiring. It's a wild place to work, but also you get to work on legitimately meaningful projects that affect a lot of people (in 2022, we made it easier for transgender ppl to get passports, helped low-income families buy food, and I got to help identify disadvantage communities for environmental funding). I'm happy to talk about USDS if you're on the fence. ow.ly/LpqJ50LVnPV #fedihire #fedijobs

Planning a #conference? Include Mastodon at least as prominently in your materials as you do other social media. If you ask presenters or attendees for handles, ask for their Mastodon handle. This is an important opportunity for the Fediverse to reach, welcome, and engage key global audiences. #academia #event
