@agx @justsoup @Sturmflut @MuhammadFreeSoftware @eliasr @Tutanota
the difference is that people find all kinds of excuses if it's android or whatever made by the big players. if an os is made by someone different it suddenly has to be perfect or is "not ready".
example: the youtube app on android frequently gets into a state where one just can't use the search button anymore. it's there but nothing happens. one has to restart the app.
it's digital stockholm syndrome.
if not t least half of the major services were shit data silos using something like sailfish os (i know, it's not perfectly free) would be no problem. everything native works and has better UI/UX than android. it's the web of shit and hardware manufacturers that make things hard.
@nemorosa I was thinking that if you want to describe a place but you have not been there, then maybe your dream of it would be the next best thing 🙂
@nemorosa maybe you had a dream about it, then you could describe the dream? 🙂
@justsoup @Sturmflut @MuhammadFreeSoftware @eliasr @Tutanota
There are devices having these issues but there are others that don't so I'd rather not throw everything into one bucket.
I find it more straight forward to talk about limitations than telling people that something isn't "for them yet" as that leaves people in jeopardy for longer and might just underestimate their abilities.
If people don't know something exists they can't even try it.
@MuhammadFreeSoftware @eliasr @Tutanota
True DeGoogling means removing Android period.
To me Android is also everything that derives from AOSP, that originates from Google ...
You can't say you're free while you are in the middle of the bridge (because if bridge falls you're dead)
@justsoup @Sturmflut @MuhammadFreeSoftware @eliasr @Tutanota There's also #UbuntuTouch and #SailfishOS as additional alternatives.
@MuhammadFreeSoftware @eliasr @Tutanota Please speak for yourself. Lots of us are daily driving #linuxmobile on our devices.
@MuhammadFreeSoftware @Tutanota I think it's appropriate to mention true alternatives, instead of pretending that there are none. They work fine, I use them every day. But of course I am not "normal" according to you. 🙂
I think many "normal" people would be interested in alternatives that are not based on Google's Android, if they knew about them.
GrapheneOS is on the list, even though as far as I understand it GrapheneOS can only run on Google Pixel devices. Is that really degoogling?
Discovered a new beautiful mastodon instance: snabelen.no ! https://snabelen.no/
"Snabel" means the trunk of an elephant, or in this case of a mastodon, I suppose. It's the same word in Swedish but somehow when you pronounce anything in Norwegian it suddenly becomes funny 😄
> no first class citizen Linux Mobile device
The phosh page here https://phosh.mobi/about/ explains that phosh was initiated by #Purism for the Librem 5 phone, so I think #Librem5 should be seen as a first class citizen Linux Mobile device. They do exist! 🙂
@Tutanota great stuff, but I'd like to see also some real Android alternatives listed, I mean there are also mobile operating systems that are not based on Android. See #LinuxMobile #MobileLinux @linmob #mobian #postmarketOS #pureos #phosh #UbuntuTouch @phosh and so on.
Yesterday I was giving a guest lecture about Free and open-source software at Karlstad university. Here are the slides (mostly in Swedish) if anyone wants to look, or to use them for something: https://eliasrudberg.se/foss-lecture-may2025.pdf
@b0rk I think there is a need for an option somewhere between "no idea what it is" and "somewhat confident", becuase it's the kind of thing that someone might know perfectly well what it is and for that very reason have zero confidence in it 🤣
@mothninja yay! 🙂
Statement by the Board of Uppsala University on the situation in Gaza
"We therefore call on the Swedish government to explicitly condemn Israel’s actions, to immediately resume its funding of UNRWA, and to actively work within the EU to take all measures at its disposal (including imposing trade sanctions on Israel) to prevent a genocide."
Letter signed by Anne Ramberg, chair of the Board of Uppsala University
