#WritersCoffeeClub 22/5: How do you make a location youโ€™ve never visited feel โ€˜realโ€™ for the reader?

I've never been to any of the places I write about, they don't exist, but I've been to other towns, plains, and caves. I haven't been to the royal castle in Curandon, but I've been to other castles. I've never been to the Umathari desert, but that didn't stop me from describing it so that my beta readers thought it was a real place. But how did I do it? I've never been to a desert. I don't know.

@nemorosa maybe you had a dream about it, then you could describe the dream? ๐Ÿ™‚

@eliasr Dreams are actually more difficult to describe than real life, dreams have that ethereal quality, whereas real life has a physicality, a heaviness, and... right about now I'm starting to think I'm misunderstanding you ๐Ÿ™‚

@nemorosa I was thinking that if you want to describe a place but you have not been there, then maybe your dream of it would be the next best thing ๐Ÿ™‚

@eliasr I rarely dream in a way that I can control, I wish I could, though! It would be spectacular!
