@accrescent I'm curious about how you plan to do this:

"We also plan to continue allowing developers to submit apps to Accrescent without registering their apps through Android developer verification"

From what we've seen, those apps would not be installable on Android, but only AOSP ROMs that remove the new restrictions. Did Google provide anything concrete that lets Accrescent install "unverified" apps on Android devices? We've only heard vague promises.

Dr Lagodinsky went on a valid rant about Parliament needing better information on funding plans.

~“Where is the strategic thinking in having AI gigafactories? Why are we pumping billions into gigafactories when even potential investors can’t identify a business case. We have a lot of GPUs using resources, but doing what?”

He’s right. The EU basically wrote a €30M check to Nvidia instead of addressing more fundamental problem of no EU-made AI hardware.

Fabrizia Benini closed with the most powerful call for engagement from FOSS developers I have ever heard from the Commission.

~“Your input is crucial. Help identify which digital commons are most strategic for open Internet stack. Share experiences with sustainable governance models that have a chance of making it in the European market. We can align policy and funding. We can turn this strength into a competitive advantage. I count on your ideas and frank feedback today and tomorrow.”

Benjamin Bögel attended FOSDEM. He recognized how much FOSS is created by individuals and how many libraries don’t have a distinct business case, but still are extremely valuable building blocks. Grants work well for this.

Fabrizia Benini: While NGI program is ending, its cascading grants model for individuals not able to access other kinds of funding due to administrative overhead will continue with the Digital Commons European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (DC-EDIC).

I'm a big fan of encrypted connections. Towards that end, I just did a survey of all the apps in @fdroidorg to see if any of the source repos would not work with https://. This includes the over 5000 apps and all of their git submodules. All the git URLs that did not have encrypted connections (e.g. git:// http://) could be upgraded to https://. So I filed a bunch of merge requests, and am working towards forcing https://

Thanks for interesting discussions! After over 30 years of working on free software and digital commons, it is amazing to see this momentum!

And @fdroidorg was there too!

💡 Governments play a crucial role to support the #DigitalCommons.

@ChristopherWilson (from @MyDataglobal) highlights their vital role and emphasises that the design challenge is also a key consideration.

Let’s build systems that serve people, not platforms.

There is a danger to systems that automatically track CVEs. Its definitely good to automate tracking CVEs as much as possible. The danger comes when people do not understand what it means. The presence of library version with a CVE is not a binary flag that something is insecure. Just as importantly, the lack of CVEs does not mean the code is secure.

Lots of coders want this to be a binary flag. The right way to think of this in binary terms is: did a maintainer review the ?

@wilhelm ok wow then we really do need to focus on making sure the is enforced! I hadn't realized it had gotten that bad on iOS. I haven't looked in years.

@eff As far as I can tell, Google's plan means that citizens of countries sanctioned by the US can no longer develop Android software, as Google can't legally accept their payment to become approved developers even if the developer is willing to go through the process. No matter if they are dissidents against whatever regime the US disapproves of.

@eff This is a cause for concern for business develops like my team. We build internal apps and decoy them via MDM software. Never used play store or Google dev account. This could block us deploying our apps so it's been raised with the hardware manufacturer of the Android handheld scanners.

Big news! 🚨 More countries opt for #OpenSource to protect their digital sovereignty.

The Austrian Ministry for Economic Affairs migrates away from Microsoft 365 to a Nextcloud and LibreOffice solution. 💪

Google creating a global centralized registration system for new Android apps is a bad idea for users, for developers, and competition. Google should nip it in the bud now. eff.org/deeplinks/2025/11/appl

Help shape Europe’s Digital Commons — Open position for EDIC Director (F/M/X)

Last week, the European Commission announced the creation of the EDIC Digital Commons, a new initiative to support open, interoperable digital commons and strengthen digital sovereignty for 450 million Europeans.

The consortium is now hiring a Director to join the founding team and take the #EDICDigitalCommons into its next phase.

@ilumium I think it is important to point out that we do want to see a drop in users of services like PornHub because we want to make sure that children and minors are no longer accessing them. At the same time, there needs to be better solutions than just blocking. The adult content industry should be putting money into real privacy respecting age verification systems. It is possible to do.
