@aral So if you don't like Mozilla or Google, that leaves the one major browser engine you'd approve of being Apple's WebKit? I hope you can see why I say we need a Small Tech browser engine?

And from studying the current state of play, such an engine cannot afford the complexity of an efficient JavaScript engine nor it's extensive APIs.

I get hundreds of millions of dollars every year by legitimising surveillance capitalists and enabling them to violate your privacy by default. (I wouldn’t exist without them.) Please trust me on privacy.

Why are you all looking at me like that?

OK, OK, you can stop glaring: I’m Mozilla, y’all love me. 💕

It has come to my attention that there are those on Mastodon who think that anyone who doesn't agree with their politics should be cast out of the federation.

Please stand up for Freedom of Speech.

True Freedom of Speech means you will have to deal with the fact that not everyone thinks the same way as you and will therefor come across views that either make you happy or extremly angry.

Communication is the key to making the world a better place and the only way that progress can be made.

If you lock people out becase they don't agree with you, you are only hurting those you claim to care about because those with extreme views will continue to speak, with the only difference being that no one will challenge them.

Arrogance is the biggest threat to our society.

I’ve preordered a Librem 5, but hope both phones are a great success.

I’ve been following the Librem 5 for about a year now, and it sounds like when it launches September 24, it will be perfectly usable. From this article, I think the PinePhone will be in a “perfectly usable” state come March 2020.

Finally, true GNU/Linux phones, coming VERY soon 🙂

@jlcrawf I'm not espousing any personal views about the far right, the far left, or Islam. I was only pointing out the similarities in some of the sentiments and rhetoric I see in social media today to those I saw in the aughts for the War on Terror and those I wasn't alive for but read about in the 1950s for the Cold War. All in the context of how similar thinking was used to justify the abuses documented in that book.

@kyle
Giving your DNS requests a secure tunnel to Cloudflare is like giving you a safe ride in an armored vehicle to a dark alley at midnight.

Disappointed that Firefox is giving Cloudflare user DNS resolution data by default via DoH. I trust my ISP but if I didn't, I'd use a trusted VPN to protect *all* my traffic. DoH is just a DNS-only VPN. What's worse, if you do use a VPN for FF will still leak your DNS data to Cloudflare by default. blog.mozilla.org/futurerelease

Is the EU trolling the UK?

The EU have nominated their new Trade Commissioner, it's Phil Hogan, from *Ireland*. Mr. Hogan will be responsible for negotiating any future trade deals between the EU and the UK (assuming Brexit happens).

Regarding future negotiations he re-iterated to-day the EU stance that nothing can proceed until the UK accepts the obligations in the Withdrawal Agreement.

@Wolf480pl I see your point but the whole artifice is fundamentally deceptive. Being altruistic and deceptive at the same time seems unsustainable over the long term. It seems more likely to work for people with non-benevolent motives, for whom deception is their native mode. A society whose ruling ideas are the best deceptions seems likely to end up being governed by narcissists. Wait ... ;)
